Default What song got you interested in classical guitar?

I saw this thread idea under acoustic guitars. I have loved the sound of classical forever but thinking back I must say a song that stands out for me is the nylon string guitar solo in "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart. I know that's pretty weird but reality is that way.

J. S. Bach. The man was a genius and I love his music as much now as I did as a kid...maybe more.

Bourree in E-minor by Bach via initially listening to Bream's lute music.

Cool What song got you interested in classical guitar?

I was raised on classical music that my dad would listen to, including Segovia. And the guitar I played when I was taking an interest was a nylon string classical guitar, all mahogany with a tie block bridge...a real beater, however...but it played in tune.

At the time, my main interest was learning how to play "rock n roll" so I could jam with a few friends that were also learning how to play.

As I got older, my musical tastes expanded, and I found myself enjoying more classical pieces...Mozart, Beethoven, Satie, Brahms, Chopin, and Bach, among many others, especially music played by small ensembles...Chamber music or quartets. When my daughter was planning her wedding, she asked me to help her select the music for the occasion. Johann Pachelbel was her first choice.

When I first listened to Pachelbel's Canon in D, it was being performed by a chamber orchestra, and it became embedded in my mind. The first time I heard it performed solo, on a classical guitar by Per-Olov Kindgren, I was smitten!!! No, blown away would be far more accurate.

That renewed my interest playing classical guitar.

I heard my teacher warming up with Villa Lobos' prelude in E minor once before a lesson...I immediately wanted to play classical!

I ended up not having the discipline...but I'll always be a player/lover of nylon strings, for whatever kind of music I play.

Default Movies & Cartoons

I was captured by the sound of classical (Spanish) guitar from western movies. When ever a cowboy/gunfighter went into a Mexican town to chase someone on the run, the Spanish guitar music was large and in charge.
I was smitten by the movie sound tracks and I still have the receipt from when I traded a Les Paul standard AND a black face twin reverb for the 1975 Alvarez Yairi (in 1976 @ 26 years old) that I still have.
FYI: My classical music appreciation must have come from Warner bros cartoons.

Asturias was the song that made me want to try classical guitar, but it was numerous Tarrega pieces that kept me interested once I actually started playing. If I had to pick one, the obvious choice is Recuerdos de la Alhambra. I have known it for years, and I am still trying to improve at it and make it more lyrical (I really LOVE Ana Vidovic's playing of it). Even though my version is pretty lacking, it is still the song I play when I want to impress someone (who isn't a classical guitarist; if they are, I'd rather play something easy, fairly well, instead of Recuerdos... poorly).

For me, it was Douglas Niedt playing "Away in a Manger" for Fingerstyle Magazine in 2007. I thought it was beautiful and wanted to learn it.

I heard him perform in person a few years ago. It was WONDERFUL. He is a fabulous guitar player.

In answer to the original question: No doubt about it, Recuerdos de la Alhambra.

(Decades after first hearing this and wanting to play this I finally did learn to play this!)

More generally though, it was probably the Los Indios Tabajaras records we had when I was a kid (one of which included Recuerdos de la Alhambra) that really turned me on to classical guitar.

Yes, that song he submitted to Fingerstyle Magazine inspired me to buy his CD "In Heavenly Peace", together with the notation/score book for the songs..
