Archtop Players, What Amp Do You Use?
I play my Gibson L-5 thru an early 80's Roland JC-55. I love the tone this little amp gets - and its so light and easy to carry around. What amps are you archtop players using?

i have an inexpensive, portable roland cube amp that would work well for an archtop, if you are looking for a budget amp.

You know, someone gave me a cheap little $99 Line6 modeling amp. When you turn off all the effects and EQ it flat, it actually works really well for jazz with an archtop. Who would have thought...

'68 Fender Twin Reverb. For jazz I play an Eastman 810CE and the twin is the best I've found even though it's a tad heavy. Well....maybe more than a tad heavy.

What kind of L-5 do you have? Archtop players want to know, because a a L-5CES is a really different guitar from a L-5C.
I play my '77 L-5CN through a DRRI. The guitar has a Lollar Johnny Smith PU. The amp is not perfect, it's a bit heavy for hauling around, and like all Fender amps it has too much bass, i.e. you can wrestle with the low body resonant note feedback in some rooms, gigs. I really wish I had an Evans amp. OTOH, at low volumes, in the studio, it sounds frickin' fantastic. '60's jazz sound? Yeah. Oh, and for the '47 L-5? No amp at all, it's an acoustic guitar. I'd love to see some of you L-5 guys post more clips! |

I use a Henrikesen Jazzamp Head with a Raezer's Edge 12ER Cab. I was using an Acoustic Image (for sale), but picked up the Jazzamp and fell in love with it.

Began using a Fender Blues Jr with the Godin but recently I've been playing it more through a Fishman Mini.
Love those L5's.... Jerry |

For both my Gibson ES-175 (1967) and my Taylor T-5 (2006), I prefer using my old Yamaha GL100-112 solid state amplifier... just makes it easier to get that flat, classic jazz tone with the 175... a bit heavy, but I don't play out all that much, so I don't have to schlep it around a whole lot! Were I gigging a bunch, I'd have to go for something lighter, like a Roland or a Polytone...
I do have an old Fender Deluxe Reverb, but I like the tone of the Yamaha for clean jazz sounds, a `la Jim Hall...

Simply the best amp I've ever used. Bet it sounds great with that RE cab.

It really does. The head came with an 10" Henricksen cab, which also sounds good. I am tempted to sell it, but it is pretty handy given its overall size. It is pretty compact.
