That's all he had in the book, but Robbie really does deserve credit for ''discovering'' Jessie Winchester. The album was a big deal in the crowd that I knew back then, but I do remember Jessie on the radio, by phone from Canada of course, saying that the album made him more of a folk singer and he felt that he had more soul in him than what the album showed.

Your Favorite Music to Do the Dishes By (and other chores...)
I had to do the dishes this morning and ended up putting on Led Zep I. I tend to like something uptempo when doing chores.
What do you listen to to keep the homefires burning when doing chores? I'll list more later. scott memmer |

One of the things I love about that video is that Elvis Costello is absolutely chagrined at the idea of "following" Jesse with a tune... and the lady is actually moved to tears from Jesse's performance! I don't believe I have ever heard a songwriter who could say something very simply... and have the listener walk away just shaking their head at the impact of those simple words... I don't believe in the whole "he's the BEST" ideology in music, at all, but especially when it comes to songwriters... there have been a LOT of terrific songwriters, and Jesse hangs his hat with the best of them...

Wow. Brought tears to MY eyes, too, like Neko's.

Well, as a Vietnam veteran, that ruined him for ME. Sorry.

OK Scott, here's my 2nd favorite Jesse Winchester song. There are a couple of three live versions out there but for my money, nothing that comes close to the studio version above. |

Here's another stunning song, "Little Glass of Wine." Auggie, did you ever have a chance to see him in concert? SO Amazing.... |

I did not get to see Jesse on stage. I bought Let the Rough Side Drag decades ago, didn't like it much at the time and didn't rediscover him (thru the Shama-Lama clip on youtube) until he was already gone. I'm a bit slow that way I guess. I had never heard of Eva Cassidy, Kate Wolf or Dave Carter either until they were gone. |
