Positioning Repair Cleats inside a Guitar
I know this should be pretty simple, but I struggle with placing crack repair cleats inside the guitar, particularly when it needs to go deep into the body. I have large arms and hands, so I can't see the mirror once I'm inside. The crack I am working on now is an extremely tight crack that glued up nicely, but is very difficult to see on the inside anyway. The outside is easy to see. I've tried rare earth magnets, putting one on the outside and double-stick taping the cleat to the other. I then maneuver it in place with a long piece of wood until I think it lines up with the outside magnet. when I get close to the top from the inside it snaps up alright, but does not do so in a predicable fashion and ends up turned a little or not quite centered on the crack. I've only tried it dry, but the dry runs were not consistently good, so I am not going to put glue on it until I am confident of the results. There has to be a better way!! Any suggestions?
Thanks, Bill |

To orientate your cleat, use two magnets fitted to a custom caul, this way there is no chance of mis-alignment
