My thoughts are with you and your mates down there.
My hope is that the inactivity toward climate change doesn't find us all facing catastrophes every season. Wishing a calming rain for your country.

Australian author Thomas Keneally wrote an excellent account recently of the situation here.

Thanks for that, Bruce.
I'm impressed enough by the Guardian's announcement/renouncement to put a quid or two into the coffer.
Hang in there.

Was almost looking good yesterday morning but all 3 fires near here flared up from strong gusts & got a bit angry again by the afternoon. Still pretty smoky around here.

Been getting used to being let down with rain forecasts that dwindle away closer to the date but we have 5 days of consistent rain/showers predicted from Friday till Tuesday potentially delivering up to 90-100mm (4") in that time.

It's not huge but it's more than we've had in the last 2 or 3 months combined & even though we've been warned it probably won't extinguish the fires it should be ample to give them a good kick in the guts, please deliver this time!!

P.S. And it looks pretty widespread so hopefully the same forecast applies down Bruce's way.

Sending prayers your way.

It's really amazing how many crazy ways fires can start when the weather is so intensely hot and dry...

The Helicopter lights mentioned in this post reminds me of an Iraq War story told to me by an Army Master Sergeant... He was interrupted in the middle of a meeting with guys yelling about a fire outside their barracks - but what they were yelling made no sense.... He at first thought it may have been an attack or some sort of arson.... But no - a pallet of water bottles had ignited and caught on fire which subsequently burned up a Humvee parked near it.... They were yelling "The water is on fire... The water is on fire!!!" I cannot imagine the salty words which came streaming out of his mouth as men came to him yelling about "Water is on fire".... But water bottles do make good magnifier lenses and that sort of thing happens when it is really hot and dry..

The Princes Highway from Melbourne to the New South Wales border has just re-opened after being closed for more than a month.

This is getting surreal. They've upped the forecast to 5 days of showers/rain now. It's just not here yet, maybe starting tomorrow, had a few spits this afternoon.

In the meantime the main fire near here that started a week & a half ago is inching it's way closer all the time. This is at 11.30 tonight, about an hour or so back. It's just nudging up to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve & not far from adjoining Deep Space Tracking Station.

Winds are calm though & the fire is at advice level.

I hope you get the rain like what we’ve been receiving in SE Queensland over the past few days.

Some good news today regarding the fire North of where I live.

Locals on the NSW south coast are applauding the efforts of emergency services following the news that the massive Currowan Fire has been extinguished after burning for more than 70 days.

"As of 8pm tonight, the Currowan Fire burning in the Shoalhaven has been set to out," NSW Rural Fire Service announced on Facebook on Saturday night.

The blaze burnt for 74 days and across 499,621 hectares, spanning right across the region and spreading to neighbouring councils including Eurobodalla, Wingecarribee and Queanbeyan Palerang.

A total of 312 homes were destroyed and 173 were damaged.

Not quite to that extent here in Canberra, only started properly yesterday, had 30mm overnight, it's raining steadily now & doesn't look like stopping soon. Rain predicted till tomorrow & showers until Thursday. What a relief!

Different story not far from here on the coast & adjacent ranges & up into the Sydney Basin. They've been getting up to 200mm (8") per day for the last 3-4 days & now major flooding is occurring in places. The irony lol.

The tropical trough is moving steadily south, hope Bruce is getting it too.

I may be calling it early but I think the fire crisis is all but over.
