Igor - Welcome to the club. that's quite a selection of McIlroys and Lowden in your sig! That ziricote is wild. Seems you have the perfect setup to test the influence of the b/s woods! How have you found the cocobolo, ziricote and bubinga compare? And what about the difference between the cedar, Itailan and sitka tops?

Love Dermot's work. I've heard very good things (including from Dermot) about the Italian spruce too. I'm hoping he'll design a baritone at some point ...

My cedar/claro walnut A25c (2003) is the one pictured on the McIlroy website (Products -> A series gallery). I've got a few pics of my cedar/Kew black walnut A25c custom (2010) here:

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...6&l=7edd0e7752

I'm afraid the pics aren't great - taken indoors in a hurry with terrible lighting (which gives a slightly odd, overly orangey and greeney colour cast to the whole thing). Perhaps one day I'll take some proper shots!

The custom features are an extra-wide nut width (46.7mm), extra-wide spacing at the bridge (60mm), Gotoh 510 21:1 machine heads with ebony buttons and an ebony backplate on the headstock. It has a K&K Pure Western Mini soundboard transducer and L R Baggs M1a soundhole magnetic pickup (which I may swap out for a Fishmann Rare Earth Blend or a SD MagMic) wired in stereo.

Eventually I'll get round to some videos... I'll let y'all know when I do.

Best,

Dan

Hi Dan,

One of these days I will try to give my account of all the influences of woods on the sound of a Mcilroy guitar.

In any case, maybe we should ask Dermot himself (deemcilroy) about the same point.
When I ordered my A56 with coco bolo / Italian, I wanted originally a guitar with a African blackwood, fortunately Dermot advised me to change it to coco/Italian.
I certainly haven' t been disappointed yet.

Best regards
Igor

Thanks Igor.

When I came to my A25c custom (2010), I was originally thinking Australia Blackwood or Koa, possible with swiss spruce ... and then tempted to go either cocobolo or bubinga with cedar (or possibly swiss). In the end though I couldn't afford the upcharge for the fancier woods. I've played an A55 bubinga and compared it to my A25c (2003) and really loved the tone of it. To my ears, it was very nicely balanced and lush - most of the low end and overtones of rosewood, but with a less scooped and more fuller sounding mid. I would imagine the cocobolo is broadly similar (?).

What I was suprised by is the extent to which the McIlroy sound is present across all the combinations I've tried. e.g. I've played an A30 (EIR/sitka) from about 2001 and it didn't sound as wildly different to my A25c (2003) as I would have expected. They were less different, to my ears, than my Larrivee LV-09 (EIR/sitka) and L-05MT are from eachother.

Out of curiosity (and coming from someone with two A25c's), what was the thinking on the second A55 cocobolo/cedar?

Regarding my ordering another A55 (coco/cedar) I really doubt whether I can bring in any rational argument which is strong enough to satisfy the scrutiny of an objective analysis. For that matter, I think any of us who has this strange passion is in a sense a little bit crazy. Why do we have more than one guitar anyway?
How many pianos has an average piano player?
I haven't looked up whether there is an Piano Forum somewhere on the web where people have like list of 10 Steinway&Sons in different woods and discussing how the Madagascar rosewood will influence the sound of one's new ordered Bachman piano (I can't stop giggling while writing this line, just imagining some guys poor wife while he announces a new piano coming .
Anyway, I lively remember the moment my A55 coco came in, I was so happy, the guitar sounded and looked like heaven, so maybe I just want myself being that happy again (I don't think we need Freud to analyse this).
If anything else, this form of pure happiness (if it can be afforded with money at all) is clean and simple and I can't imagine it being evil at all, no matter what anybody else thinks about it.
Cheers
igor

I too am curious about your next guitar, and am aware coco/cedar is the best combo you have discovered thus far, and certainly won't be hard to resell your lesser farorite of the two here on this forum (hint). Maybe you have a different nut width or trim woods in mind... I would be curious how an AS or AP version compares.... anyway, looking foreward to the pics!

Yes, Coco/Italian has ebony bindings. Looks quite cool with all this pale white on the top. And the sound is just... wow.

Drool! Gorgeous, especially the Italian top one. The daydreaming about McIlroy guitars continues. Sigh.

Looking forward to the sound clips.
