Default Weird iPhone tone / Middle Of Night ?

At 4:45 this morning, while on charge, my SE 2020 was emitting a soft chime, then a long silence, maybe 5 seconds, then again, and again, till it woke me up.

No alarm was on.

When I picked it up (still plugged into lightning cord on charge) it stopped.

No notice's, no nothing. 92% charged. Left it on charge went back to sleep and when I got up it was 100% charged.

What the heck was that? I've had iphones for years, never had that happen.

The only time I’ve experienced anything similar, it was an amber alert/silver alert/weather alert.

Once my iPhone 11 gave a weird chime, then briefly displayed “smart charge will complete charging at x-o’clock”, then disappeared without a trace. Never seen that message again.

Go into the Settings. Check the Sleep setting under Focus. You may have created a Sleep pattern with a set period of rest time.

This will not show up in the Clock app, so there will be no alarm. The waking tone starts quiet, getting progressively louder until you dismiss it. Picking up the phone may dismiss it for you.

My iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro will make this same noise when on the charger at night. As far as I can tell, it happens because the charging system indicates a charger has been attached and is beginning to charge the device.

The sound I heard at night was the exact same one I hear when putting any of my devices on a charger.

I think what happens is the device in question has become fully charged at some point in the night, then it internally "disconnects" the charger. The battery begins to slowly discharge, presumably because things inside the device are once again using up battery power and slowly draining it.

Once the battery drops down far enough, the device "re-connects" to the attached charger, makes the "soft ding" noise and begins charging once again.

Rinse and repeat.

My solution has been to turn off the sound on my devices. I don't remember if this midnight "ding" happened when I turned my devices off but I now charge them in a different room so I don't hear anything anyway.

Hope this helps.

Best,
PJ

You may have experienced a quick AC power drop a couple of times. Each time the phone goes on to charge it sounds a chime.

Once we had ancestral homes haunted by tormented, deceased aristocrats. Now we have cell phones haunted by tormented, deceased millennials.

Who said romance is dead!

I hesitate to say too much because the way people can change default tones has caused me to give well intended but wrong advice.

This is for sure. If you first slide the side silent button vs make a software do not disturb setting and second, set the phone on a hard surface you should be able to be woken by vibration if some sort of an emergency call occurs but not have too much intrusion. That seems to be a common happy medium between noise and nothing.

"Tormented millennials" ... now there's an oxymoron for you!

I take it easy on the millennials. Directly or indirectly I support or supervise hundreds of people. I know plenty among friends and family. While some stereotypes are true, our workplace and HR data shows most of them to be among our best and their biggest critics standing out among our worst.
