No, I'd save my money and get an all solid Martin if I wanted a black Martin.

Yep, save up and get the real thing. It’s an atomic cannon.

Well, I'll go ahead and comment since the dead thread has already been revived.

I've never played it, but I'd imagine aside from aesthetics, the all-HPL Martin Dreadnoughts roughly sound the same. And I did have a DX Woodstock, which was all-HPL. It was a very nice guitar, BUT for the same money you can get an HPL Martin with a solid spruce top, e.g. DX2E. Granted, it doesn't have the same look, but I think the DX2E Sunburst model does look pretty nice. And having also owned a spruce top HPL model, I can say the spruce top makes a big difference.

Personally I think it’s tacky garbage, a shallow ‘cash’ grab. You could get a real guitar for this price.

I have one because we do a lot of camping and the temp and humidity can be all over the place. Mine has a great sound. The main difference I noticed is that it just doesn't have quite the volume of my other guitars, but I keep trying different strings and it's getting better. Otherwise it's a great guitar for my purpose.

My impression of the Martin all HPL guitars is that they haven't quite got the bracing right yet. They have added the bow tie braces between the X and a full width carbon fibre rod behind the bridge, which is all about trying to fix issues with using HPL as a guitar top material.

If they do keep producing all HPL guitars then I expect there will be a new bracing system in a few years time. But I actually think that they will quietly fade out of the catalogue, and then become collectable!!!

Hey I love a good zombie thread so I'll pile on too. I really don't see this Johnny Cash model as being much different than me wearing a Johnny Cash t-shirt. It has nothing to do with him or anything he played, it just shows other people that I respected the man and his music. I haven't played this particular model, but I used to own a black X series which was all HPL and basically the same thing without all of the Cash stickers on it. It sounded ok unplugged and plugged in it was a pretty good stage guitar. The only reason I moved mine on was it really wasn't that much more durable than a spruce top X series and those did sound better. So I like it for what it is and I do think it's useful and it does look pretty cool.

I don’t have the Johnny Cash model, but I do have an all HPL Martin that I picked up for $400 on sale. For that price, it’s actually a great guitar - it still sounds like a Martin. I got it mainly to have something very durable, which it has been - I left it out on a stand all winter and it never even needed a truss rod adjustment. Sure, I’d rather have a nice carbon fiber, but don’t have two grand.

I wonder if he gets many requests to play Lemmy's "Ace of Spades" on that?
