Default "Ten Degrees and Getting Colder" by Gordon Lightfoot (cover)

The colder winter weather recently reminded me of Gordon Lightfoot's "10° & Getting Colder" from his "Summer Side of Life" album released in 1971. And like many guitar players, I like a singable song that tells a good story. And I think many guitar players who have made money with music and traveled around from town to town can relate to a guy who got into trouble on the road. The notion of having to trade off a Martin guitar to survive sends chills down the spine.

The guitar is my Guild F512 played with the capo on the 2nd fret using D, G, A and an occasional E7. The chords are so straightforward that you'd think this song was simple. But learning to sing this song anywhere near like Gordon Lightfoot takes some practice to get this sounding musical. Fortunately, this is a song I have been singing and playing for quite a while, so it's part of my repertoire for the 12-string.

Thanks very much to those interested in watching -- it's always appreciated!

- Glenn

Thank you very much SpruceTop!

I really appreciate knowing you are there! I haven't done a Gordon Lightfoot recording for a while, so I thought it was about time. One of my YouTube subscribers suggested this song a while ago, so I am just getting around to it. I hope you have a good Christmas season SpruceTop! Thanks for your supportive comments!

Hi Glenn. That was wonderful. I thought I was a Gordon Lightfoot fan but I didn’t know that song before hearing your rendition, or at least I didn’t remember it . You did a great job, thanks for posting it.

Really nice Glenn!

I used to listen to him a lot when I was younger, but I drifted away. I think its time to look up what else he has done. Thanks for this, it was great to listen to. The 12 really rings out.

Thank you Barry!

I very much appreciate that you keep listening each time I put one of these things up. You are a real stalwart, Barry! Thank you and thank you for your supportive comments.

I enjoy listening to Gordon Lightfoot, but I kind of do it in binges unless I decide to cover one of his particular songs, and then I always go back to remind myself how he does the song. If I leave too much time between listening to the original, my version tends to shift around too much, a little too far away from where Gord was. I don't want to do a carbon copy of GL's work, but I also want it to be recognizable.

Thanks, too, for your thoughts on the sound of the 12-string. That F512 is really something!

How nice to hear from you!

Thank you for your comments on my singing, but I can tell you in no uncertain terms that my voice at age 71 is not better than it was when I was younger, let's say age 30 or 40. When I go back and listen to recordings I made at that age, I really notice the difference.

At the same time, though, I am very grateful that I can still sing at all. It just takes more work and more practice at this age.

And thanks too about the Guild 12-string! I love that guitar, too!

Thank you Larry!

Yes, that Guild F512 is one powerhouse guitar!

I bought some new Neve-style microphone preamps in this last year, and they really are very good for a guitar like this because they have so much headroom. I can just sing and play the way I normally do for the recording and nothing overloads, nothing clips, nothing distorts... It takes a whole lot of worry out of the whole process.

Thanks so much for listening and commenting, Larry! I always appreciate hearing from you!
