Arrow Tyler Robbins R.1ca Engleman Spruce - Madagascar Rosewood

This is a commissioned build that Tyler Robbins has underway for me that I would like to to share here. This is his larger R.1ca model with cutaway, arm and rib bevels.

Below are the tone woods we selected for this build; a nicely figured set of Madagascar Rosewood and a creamy set of Engleman Spruce.

Tyler uses the Galloup grading system for selecting tops that will consistently produce the desired tone. This system measures the wood’s stability and acoustic quality by monitoring data on density, speed of sound, modulus of elasticity and radiation coefficiency. It works on a scale from 1-10. The higher the rating the better the stiffness to weight ratio and the more efficient the piece will be. This set of Engleman earned a grade of"10" before being selected.

After some consultation back and forth here is the basic look of the guitar's rosette and fingerboard inlays that Tyler developed.

To add to the modern look of this guitar Tyler uses a colored resin material for the top purfling, as well as portions of the rosette, headstock overlay, backstrip and end graft. After considering many color options this is the one we decided to go with and how it looks on the headstock overlay:

Thanks for having a look, much more to come!

WOW!! Super cool Doug!! I seldom look at AGF these days as unlike most, I've been really busy. But, this was a welcoming treat to see one of your builds and such a cool one at that.

Can't wait to see it done

Hi Amerigo, I've been a fan of Tyler's since I met him at Woodstock in 2017. Love the doubleneck guitar you've posted here too. That Cocobolo!

Very cool modern look Doug. Just look at that little piece of purfling to fit in there. The work these folks do is amazing.

I certainly hope this does come to the next B.I.G. I have not played his guitars and would love to see this one.

Wow! Congratulations Doug. This looks amazing so far.

I was just thinking about the time, through your introduction, I met or even heard of Tyler Robbins. I got to use and try out your fiddleback mahogany Robbins at my first public gig...
in a quiet room in front of the two of you. Then (at least in my mind) I did the guitar equivelent of a face plant. However it was still a delight to play, and an unforgettable moment. I've seen nothing but increadible work from Tyler ever since. In fact, all those Galloup boys and girls are just incredible.

I'm looking forward to following along and seeing all those death defying meters that Tyler seems to pull off.

Hi Dan, that was very cool that you got to demo my Robbins Fiddleback Tree Mahogany guitar at the last Woodstock and I got to see your LH Saddle Pal.
Tyler does some amazing work on those miters. He does have access to the Galloup School's CNC equipment which is a good time to give a shout out to Tom Dalia, the CNC operator at Galloup who helps Bryan Galloup, Sam Guidry and Tyler Robbins with their amazing work.

Default Robbins R.1ca - Engleman Spruce Top

Here is a first look at the inlayed Rosette which incorporates Madagascar Rosewood, ebony and a bit of the colored resin.

The Top braces being glued in here along with another R.1ca that Tyler is building concurrent with mine.

Here is a close-up picture of the rosette with a partial view of the backstrip through the sound hole.

Thanks for following along!

Hi Doug,
That looks delicious.
The color palette in this guitars resin parts sure reminds me of the ones applied in the one Joel builds for me currently.
As we started with the intention to use stone slices for those inlays originally and couldn‘t in the end the resin filled in quite literally.. we call it Michauderite... as if it was a stone... so the name is taken.. but it sure looks great
Funny how stuff like this happens simultaneously.
Even better if it creates instruments that both look good and sound great.
All the best with this one!
Curious to follow and to see it evolves !
Cheers & stay healthy
Lonzo
