I'm not a history buff but I served in Reagan's Navy back when pride and professionalism were the mantra and there was a strong connection with history and the Midway and Coral Sea were still active duty carriers. I'm looking forward to seeing it with a friend in who is not a history buff. If I can sit through the latest SJW crap that Hollywood has turned the franchises I grew up into I will have no problem referring to my own experiences to color my impressions.
BTW, I don't put much stock in any professional movie critic nowadays. Even though I'm a vet I later went back to school to learn the mindset of the other end of the political spectrum. Everybody's got an axe to grind but history is written by the winners.

When I first moved here (Hampton Roads) both Midway and Coral Sea were in and out of the harbor. Mention of them brought back memories. I did a dependents day cruise on Enterprise. Good memories.

Saw it today with a couple other boomer/geezers that grew up watching this genre. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Worth a matinee ticket to see on the big screen at least.

This thread made me look up the Doolittle raid and the ripple effect that led to Midway.
Amazing history.

We saw it Sunday evening. Shortest 2+ hour movie I have seen in a while. I come from a navy vet family as well as a former naval aviation ground maintenance electrician stationed at former NAS Alameda, CA. Really looked forward to the movie and it didn't disappoint.

What fascinates me about the Midway battle was the game theory aspects of the battle, how timing, and luck, played such an important part. The original Midway movie did not really emphasize this enough. Strategy, and aggressiveness, in this battle was the key element to the US win. Of course individuals had to carry out the movements, but bad strategy would have lost the battle and extended the war for more years.

I'm going to see it for two reasons. 1. I served on the MIDWAY in VA-115 in 72-73 of the coast of Vietnam (with a fair amount of time in country). 2. My father was a Dauntless pilot in WW2 (no, he was not in the battle).
I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks Bob. That was a well written and helpful review.
My Father was on an LST in the South Pacific so the subject always interested me. I'll make a point to watch it now.

The audio of this Midway was very reasonable compared to the 1976 version. The theater we watched it at was the newer luxe plush leather seats with waiters. I understand your concerns, but the big screen is a definite plus for this one.

Thanks for the recommendation. I rarely watch movies where there is a large disparity between the critics' rating and the audience’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes so I was struggling with my decision to watch this version of Midway or not. I guess I’ll give it a shot.

Saw the movie yesterday. Thought it was pretty good! Not one I would buy a DVD for, but good.
