That is just signature Spohn. So spare, balanced and elegant. As will be the remainder of the build.

Quite a bit of progress in the past few days.
Braces have been glued to the back and shaped: shaped back braces_600.jpg Braces have been glued to the top: raw top braces_600.jpg and trimmed. The top has been glued to the sides: top braces2_600.jpg top glued to sides_600.jpg Tuning of the top is next up, back will be glued on, then it'll start to look like a guitar! |

The inner workings of a guitar under construction is a wonder to me. I see what I see, and it is artful. What I cannot know is how the luthier's intent is reflected in the beautifully sculptured components that will, eventually, never see the light of day. Thanks for sharing those images of Max "behind the scenes."

One thing I love about Max Spohn’s guitars is that, even without any logos, you can look at a rosette or those braces and know instantly that you’re looking at one of his guitars.

Agreed. When I buy a guitar "off the rack" I don't think so much about details of the construction. Part of the secret sauce you get when having a guitar built is seeing all those little details and appreciating the expertise and craftsmanship that goes into it.

That's one of the things that initially drew to Max's guitars. Once you see one you'll have no problem identifying another one. The rosettes are all unique, but can easily be picked out of a crowd.

It was only two days ago I said it will soon be looking like a guitar, and here we are. Max now has the top tuned and the box assembled:

Next up will be the purfling and ebony binding. And then will come the sound port, shown in a sketch here: 23 - Sound hole drawing_600.jpg |

That back inlay is so perfect it could be a naturally occurring feature of the wood stock. And that rosette is unmistakably Spohn. It is all coming together beautifully.

Now that the box is closed up, it's time for the binding/purfling, which will be a 5-layer stack. It's always surprising to me how much the purfling can change the appearance of a guitar. A few images from Max:

Kevin, "Wenge Fever" is coming together just beautifully.
Twin awaits. David

Just before the holiday break, Max has sent these images now that the binding, purfling, tailpiece and sound port are complete. I'm really liking how Max's choice of Amboyna Burl works with the Wenge. We've settled on the deets for the neck, which will be up next.
Happy Holidays to everyone. More in 2024. Kevin 29 - Box complete_600.jpg 34 - rosette 2_600.jpg 31 - back complete_600.jpg 30 - tailpiece_600.jpg 32 - sound port_600.jpg |
