A nice 000-28 if open to used. Lovely spruce on rosewood shimmer and plenty of grit. Super responsive and very versatile.

I have a 000-28, and it's a wonderful guitar! I've also owned a Taylor 412c, which was also a great guitar...I'd look at both the 000 and the X12 series. If you can find a used one, it should be right in your range...

There’s a Rainsong APSE in the classifieds. I’ve had one for a year and love it. Sounds like a nice wood guitar to my ear and effortless to play with the shorter scale.

Dunno what you get in the USA for $2k, but my decision in November 2019 was an Eastman E20-P
In Octomer 2020 it was an Eastman E40-00.

I picked up a used Halcyon 000 last year for way less than $2k. Sublime, but a bit of a hunt…
Base price is still $2.2k Canadian but the wait is long.

Totally agree, or if you want new, the 000-16 Streetmaster - VTS Adirondack/Rosewood should meet your price requirements. I have the 000-16 Streetmaster and it is great.

The title of the thread has "under $2,000" in it. You're high by a thou.

I'd consider a used Taylor 322 or 522. I picked up my 522 for about $2k; love it for finger style. Gently used 322's are comfortably within your price range and are highly reviewed as well.

Good Luck,

Scott

THe 000-16SM is a great playing, great sounding guitar for $1700. Some like the finish, some don't.

Used Taylor 322. Got mine on Ebay for 1600. Great transaction as the guitar is like new. The 322 is very easy to play and sounds great to my ears. Makes difficult songs easier to play, especially if you have bad shoulders.

Those 322’s are great. I had a slot head a few years back - regrettably sold it. Someday I’ll get one again

Best short scale fingerstyle guitar under $2000

Pre-pandemic, I bought a "used" 2016 Taylor short scale spruce-over-rosewood 412e-R Grand Concert. I put 'used' in quotes because it was never played as far as I could tell. Still had the Elixir strings clear label on the pickguard, and there were no scratches anywhere on the instrument including the pickguard. I think the new retail price was in the very low 2K range, but I got a big discount as a used instrument in the ballpark of 20-30% off a new price. The label states "special edition", so it may have been an early build of that model, later to become a standard X-braced model.

Since getting it, it has improved its tone in every way. Nice little echo with the rosewood and a very slow decay. Handles delicate picking incredibly well, and can be played with many styles. Has developed a nice bass presence to go with its balanced sound. Came strung with an immaculate set of Elixir PB HD Light gauge strings, and that's what I've used on it since. Why mess with success?
HD Light gauge = {.013, .017, .025, .032, ,042, .053}.

I do not plug in my acoustics, and this one is very good for playing out as long as the room isn't too big. In a parlor or house setting it shines. No it won't compete with a large body guitar for volume, but should be understood for a smaller full size instrument. The large jumbo-esque 15" lower bout gives it some punch too, helped by the slightly larger trebles in the HD gauge strings. It does come with on-board electronics too.

Truly amazing instrument, with the short scale and a friendly 1+3/4" width nut/fretboard.

I fingerpick all my guitars using my nails as picks.

Be well and play well,

Don

I am definitely a Martin person. I own 2 short scale Martins. Neither would be under $2000. But...a friend of mine owns a Yamaha Red Label FSx3. It is a really nice, short scale, guitar. Well under $2000. The FS3 has no pickup installed, which puts it under $1000. This model is made in China. For a few hundred more, but still under 2K, the FSx5/FS5 is made in Japan. I've played both and was impressed. Worth checking out, I think.
