I just read Bob Knight's "The Power of Negative Thinking". Bob Knight wasn't the public person I want anyone to model, but he was a great coach and motivator. I'm also a big college basketball fan. Forward was written By Mike Kryszewski. It's about not forgetting to compensate for your weaknesses. It was an easy read.

Latest Murderbot novel, "System Collapse" hit my Kindle today.

If you are into sci-fi check out the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. A quirky set of mainly short tales from the first person perspective of a human/cyborg security unit (with an attitude) that has managed to defeat its control programming. Set in a corporation run universe full of all sorts of mayhem and greed.

Highly recommended.

Patience is Not a Virtue by Madeline Moscow. I think it is her first novel. It just came out. If you like those old Raymond Chandler, Dasiell Hammett hard boiled detective novels from the fifties, this one is written in the same style with a modern twist.

Default What are you reading?

Iíve read a ton of stuff since the last time I posted to this thread. One of the joys of retirement for me has been the ability to devote guilt-free time to reading. Not everything I read is great, or even good. Sometimes Iíll even give up on a book, which I hate to do - itís like leaving food on your plate. But, when I read something really good, it leaves me hungry for more.

I decide, at the beginning of 2023, that I should start keeping notes about every book I read. Iím sure Iíve missed a couple, but this is the 31st book Iíve read this year.

I love this genre - the gritty whodunnit, usually with a PI with an interesting past. Iím about halfway through this one, and already looking forward to more of the series.

"Ghosts of Honolulu" by Mark Harmon and Leon Carroll, Jr. (History)

Espionage and counter-espionage among Japanese-Americans in pre-war and in-war during WWII.

Good story presented in a very conversational way. Just got it and 80 pages in already in one short session.

EDIT ==> Coincidentally, Today is Dec 7, 2023. Pearl Harbor remembrance day.

What are you reading?

I also read some series, but not necessary all at once. But a few years ago I did with Harry Potter. (Had to keep up with my granddaughter.)

Am about to start on "Martin the Warrior", Book 6 of "Redwall" by Brian Jacques. Anthropomorphic medieval setting for series about an abbey owned by forest creatures and the wars and quests they undertake.

And part way into a re-read of the Sci-Fi military series featuring Honor Harrington by David Weber. Currently on Book 7, "In Enemy Hands", of the "Honorverse". Didn't finish the series last time, because that was years ago and he was still writing them. And may not be done yet.

Still waiting on the second book in a trilogy about the American Revolution begun with "The British are Coming" by Rick Atkinson. Research takes a while. But when he publishes it, it will go to the front of the line for me.

And I do seem to read multiple books (maybe 2 or 3) at same time. Keeps them fresh.

I just finished the Malazan series, which was a fairly epic undertaking but one of the best things I've ever read.

I started this yesterday and so far it's been excellent:

Just finished William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition. If you like SciFi, give Gibson a look.

In the middle of 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus and it has me very interested in same author's 1493 book that is the post-Columbus world.

So far I'm finding it fascinating. All sorts of and amounts of knowledge from my boomer age/era education was unknown and incorrect. It has a lot of fascinating info on people who were in the Americas and the start of those who arrived.

The tangent that got me on this might interest anyone into US history and in Upper Midwest and that was the recent Bruce Carlson podcasts on Blackhawk War.

As is my wont, currently working on two books.

Vaclav Smil "How The World Really Works." So far it lives up to it's reputation. Excellent at explaining slippery concepts like "energy."

"The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944" by Rick Atkinson. Second in the Liberation Trilogy, about(mostly) the US Army in Europe during WWII, and following "An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943." Very good account of the campaign, mistakes as well as triumphs, and does a good job of humanizing the great and the good. I have "The Guns at Last Light: The War in Europe, 1944-1945," about Normandy invasion to the end of the war, up when I finish this one.

Iíve been reading a lot of lighter stuff recently, so felt up to a challenge. Quite how I found this, Iím not sure - but Iím now about halfway through ďThe CastleĒ by Franz Kafka. Iím still not entirely sure what itís about, but itís oddly compelling - and definitely challenging.

Just finished "French Braid" by Anne Tyler, her 24th book and I've read them all. Yes I like her writing. She has won the Pulitzer prize and been short-
listed for the Man Booker prize for two of her other books.
