Curious About Les Pauls

Here is what I am curious about. Been seeing a lot about the fake Gibson Les Pauls from China. Just getting back into playing I don't have any idea how long this has been going on.

The shop I frequent has a "Chibson" that he is selling on consignment. He tells people that it is a fake and will gladly show you. He told the owner it was a fake and would label it as a copy. The seller wants $600ish for it. Struck me as high.

The same shop has an Epiphone Les Paul. I don't believe it is as much. Can't remember exactly.

Question, What one would you purchase? Why? I am leaning to the Epiphone.

that is crazy. if you want a gibson les paul, get one. epi les paul, get one.

I would definitely stay away from the fake.

I have a Epiphone Les Paul Studio in Worn Cherry. It is a stunningly beautiful instrument that plays as good as it looks. Costs about $400. $600 for a chibson? No way.

This^^^^. I picked up a used Epiphone Les Paul standard with the Epiphone case in like new condition for 300. Deals are out there. Now the "real deal" Gibsons may have a better finish or a bit better pick up system. For 3-4K they better. Im new to electrics. Started out with a bass so I could record my own songs, then a telecaster for some fills, then...well, you know how it goes. but I had some guidance from folks here and some real good players that I know. No one...not one said anything negative about Epiphones or Squier guitars. In fact most use them to gig with so their expensive guitars collection can stay home. This is no different than folks here picking up an inexpensive Yamaha to play out with to keep their Taylors or D-28, D-35, home in good shape. If you have the cash to spend and a certain tone you chase...go for it, I have for other hobbies too, nothing wrong wiith that. But dont ignore them because some cork sniffer gives them a thumbs down.

If you want the Gibson name on the headstock go for a used Studio.

I would choose the one that is not illegally not infringing on Gibson's copywrite!

+ 1 on a used Studio. A little less fancy all around, but real Gibson Pickups and real Gibson wood (and American labor if that means anything to you). I got a fairly new one for $700 and its a lovely guitar.

The Gibson Studio Tributes are a really good entry into the LP line. I had a '60s Tribute and enjoyed it. I've got a review of it, HERE.

Bob, checked out the review. Just made this harder. I like Gibson and it would look nice along side the SG. Just need to convince the Mrs. I need the Gibson more than I need her.

If I was playing gigs it would much easier. Anybody need a half a** rythm player?

WOW, amazingly thorough review. I have a LP studio but alway s itching to someday add a standard. His review really educates we dreamers that are not familiar with all the history of Les Paul productions.
