"The Water is Wide" - Teja Gerken & Doug Young
Doug and I just released the first of what's going to be a series of new duet tunes which will come out on all the streaming platforms in the coming months. Our arrangement of "The Water is Wide" is now on Spotify, Apple Music, etc., and we also put together this video:
Doug is playing his Kent Hamblin in DADGAD, I'm playing my custom shop Martin OM in CGCGCD, capo 2. Thanks for watching, and I hope folks will enjoy this one! Teja Gerken www.tejagerken.com www.tejaanddougguitar.com www.youtube.com/tejaguitar |

I was just thinking of this tune yesterday and how long it's been since playing it. Really superb arrangement and video. The tones are lush as the day is long :-)

Absolutely beautiful arrangement and performance. That song is just SO well done on fingerstyle guitar(s).
Stuart Ryan did a quick rendition of it on a recent demo for one of the guitars I built a long time ago. For his solo interpretation and comparison, see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPTZBHbVLxc |

Teja didn't mention that the water scenes are something he shot on his iphone in Mendocino, a cool spot. The logs on the ground are what's left of a dock from the days when they'd load schooners up with redwood logs.

Really nice guys. Great arrangement. Just thinking about coming up with duo parts on different tunings makes my head spin a little! Sounds great!

Thanks for the kind comments! This one was a fun one, and it actually came together very quickly. About arranging in different tunings: In this case, Doug already had a functioning solo guitar arrangement in DADGAD, so we started out with me just trying to find something that would work with that. I tend to avoid working in the same tuning, as it makes it easier to not duplicate things, and lately, I've liked using CGCGDC with a capo at the second fret for playing in D. I started out no playing the melody at all, really just providing some fills and a bit of harmony, but as we moved along, we decided that having me just play a single-line run through the melody at one point would be nice, and it came out well, I think. Doug also ended up simplifying his parts a little in a few places to make room for some of the ideas that I'd come up with.
This was also the first tune we mostly worked up using the Jack Trip hardware boxed to play together over the internet in real time, which worked really well. At this point, we've actually never been in the same room to play this tune, as we then each recorded out parts in our individual studios, going through a handful of versions before deciding we were done. And originally, we didn't have plans for a video, but then somewhere through the process I remembered that I shot some nice ocean footage on my iPhone while visiting Mendocino, California last summer, and on a whim, I tried to see what it would look like, originally using random footage from another song I'd recorded, which I showed Doug. We then each shot our parts using green screen backgrounds, and the whole video came together in less than a week from me having the idea to the final clip. There's more tunes to come, so stay tuned! I got emotional while listening to this. I wasn’t expecting it, but it swelled up out of nowhere.

Hey Hank,
First of all, really great to hear from you! And that Stuart Ryan clip is indeed lovely, as is the guitar that he's playing! Best, Teja |
