Default Beautiful bocote. Brock OM at TAMCO UK

You don't hear much about bocote. I just had to share some photos of this gorgeous OM from Brock Johnson. It sounds great too.

Has anyone used bocote or owned a bocote guitar? I would be interested to hear some opinions.

Hi Trevor, we've only used it for accents: bindings, headplates, neck lams and even finger boards. It certainly is a fine, worthy timber for instrument making. As first cousin to Ziricote it should behave similarly, though we have yet to use it for back and sides. I too would be interested to hear from those who have tried it. Your Brock is a lovely instrument.

Steve

Hi Trevor,
I built with it a number of years ago. In my hands, it ended up being quite similar to Macassar Ebony -- meaning the sound was dry with good sustain and reverb. It is very good tonewood, IMO.

Trevor, I hope you still have it on the 25th - I would love to play this one, it's beautiful.

Cheers,
David

Hi Trevor, I used bocote on my first acoustic guitar. Since it was my first ever I was doing good to just to get it built. It does sound good though, very loud with some overtones in the mids and highs. Bright sounding compared to my 55 gibson country western with mahogany b/s if that means anything.

I saw the pictures of it on FB, I'm really intrigued by Bocote as well.

How stable would the flat sawn back and sides of Bocote be if it is a relative of Zircote which is one of the most unstable woods even in quartersawn? Or is Bocote a more stable wood like Pau Ferro where it doesn't really matter too much if it's QS or not?

Trevor,

Nice looking guitar

I have used bocote on (only) one guitar. I liked it, but have not found any more material quite like the first set I got. A cousin of Ziricote, I found it similar in tone to that.

The guitar ended up in the hands of a guy who is local to Woodstock and it his "player" guitar at the moment. It is cool, as I get to see him and the guitar ever now and then.

Here a couple shots of the bocote.

Stunning guitar, John--nice that you're able to keep tabs on it...
