The Case
I've said earlier that I am making a coffin case for this guitar. While building the guitar I have been working out the details and materials to do this. For reference I want a case along the lines of this one:
With the help of my fellow AGFers we came to going with an emerald green crushed velvet for the interior. While the older cases had some pretty funky colors like dusty rose we're sticking with green. I'll be painting the exterior of the case black. To keep the case light I am using 5 ply Baltic Birch plywood and old box joint corners. Box joints are usually 90 degrees so I had to make a special multi angle box joint router jig to accomplish the lightweight strong joints that a coffin case has so many of; I am willing to stretch the "no relic" rule a bit for the case because using shiny gold hardware will not be appropriate. There is an amazing amount of hardware on a case which needs to be sourced from multiple vendors. I am going with what is usually called an antique brass finish which is fairly common. So I got hinges, and latches, and bumpers, screws etc. but I have been unable to source feet. The feet would be on the bottom when you lay the guitar case down. They would also be on the other bottom when you stand the guitar up and you probably need them on the side for when you are holding the guitar case by the handle and want to just set the guitar case down, in other words, I need a whole mess of them and they only come in stupid shiny gold! This called for spending some time on Google to learn how to make an antique brass finish on a shiny gold foot; Those are the feet. How do you do it? Why you burn it-- You get it red hot and then you drop it in water: Easy Peasy And the case project marches forward crushing all obstacles!

Great job! I like the look of those. I once used gun barrel bluing on new standard screws for an aged look on a vintage art sign. The dip process was instantaneous. Been watching this thread and enjoyed the case creation/dovetailing joints almost as much as the guitar. Thanks for sharing.

Nice case. Do you also make artisanal coffins?

Now there’s an idea! I’d certainly not ever have to worry about customer satisfaction. I suppose a long build wait list could be a problem though!

Thanks for commenting Ovation1. I’m very pleased with this new model. The deep body and old woods do a lot to build the dynamic range and tone. I hope to make a lot of these!
Thanks Zandit75, I appreciate your confidence. Mark
