Howard that looks like an artwork in itself!

I am reminded of the guy Christo, who used to wrap things back in the 70s and 80s.

Default Looking like a guitar!

It's the wrong headstock overlay. It'll have straight sides. I'll be bringing the SS 6100 fret wire to John on Saturday morning, and he'll take some profile templates of my Flammang neck as well. The Flammang neck was templated using my 1930 Gibson L-5.

Comfortable works.

Very elegant. I love that sound port. It seems most of the Luthier built guitars have sound ports - is this actually the case? If so, by customer request?

John was one of the very first to build with a side port. Here's the guitar he built for the Blue Guitar Collection of Scott Chinery, c.1997 approx.

Not only does it have 2 side ports that have sliding doors, but the front sound hole also can be adjusted.

He'll gladly build anything with or without Side-Sound.

Default More progress!

Yesterday I dropped off the SS6100 fret wire and some neck templates for John to work with. Also got him a copy of Marty Stuart's The Pilgrim reissue CD & Coffee table book as a birthday gift! Highly recommended! Anyway.....he sent me this picture later in the day.......

I'm getting excited!

Is SS6100 fret wire “jumbo“ fret wire? I have a Flammang EL35, I’m wondering if that’s the size wire that I have.

Most builders won’t put jumbo wire on without the customer requesting it.

David used it on mine because I told him to use it. I wish I had requested stainless steel, but live & learn.

Yeah, those are some Jumbo frets (.110″ x .055″) . I think that I use .080” x .043” on my flat tops and .095” x 047” or .104” x .047” on my archtops. Do you feel this size allows for a lighter touch with your left hand or easier bends? I would think you would need a light touch to avoid going sharp.

Exactly.

I don’t have any calluses to speak of, and I generally use a .013-.054 string set on my acoustics AND electrics.

There’s little to no contact occurring between my fingertips and the fretboard.

I’m not really a string bender, although I routinely bend a whole step on the 2nd string.

Regards,
Howard
