At the most recent NCAL meeting, March 3, 2019, I gave a presentation to the group on my tried and true method for controlling the outcome of the neck shaping process. I imagine this is a bit simplistic, but everyone seemed to be on the edge of their seats. Let me know what you think, please. it's about 21 minutes, and is only the first installment.

Many thanks for posting this Bruce.
I have a book where it explains this method but I could not for some reason get my head around it. With the clear instruction in this video it was like the light bulb going on. Looking forward to the next installment and trying this out. Cheers, Glenn. |

Hi Bruce,
I was sitting right there while you did your demonstration and really enjoyed the presentation. As an old guy, remembering every nuance just wasn't going to happen. Tad did a great job with the video. Very helpful. Thanks to both of you.

Seriously Bruce, I will tell you that when I watched the video I thought to myself: “this guy heard me”

I liked it as well, neck carving always seems like such a mystery to me. I am waiting for the next installment to see how you finish it as although I get what you did and understand the lines etc. it seems to me the spokeshave (sp?) removes wood in a straight line so the way you take it from the outside lines just under the fretboard to meet the "center" lines which are actually off set from the true center lines, you end up with a triangle with a little flat spot at the center of the neck not an ellipse?

Glad to notice your edit, John. While I believe myself to be skilled at lutherie itself, I also believe I have a nearly as well developed skill at drawing the guitar out of the client, sometimes even getting it closer to want they want that they themselves have ever imagined. Risky, actually, but the track record speaks for itself. Thank you for saying so.

Here is the second (final) installment of the neck shaping talk I gave at March 3, '19's NCAL meeting in my shop. While I am calling this a "Neck Shaping Talk", there is actually quite a bit of luthier philosophical rambling, as I am wont to do at any opportunity. If you are one of the many wondering if I am a gem in the rough or a self absorbed fool, this should help you decide.

I enjoyed those demos immensely, Bruce - thank you for sharing them, and thanks to Tad for filming it. I am so looking forward to your talk at BIG in a couple of weeks. (Not to mention seeing and hearing your guitars for the first time!)

I found myself struggling to comprehend iMovie, and it is great to be back to something I grasp more fully: lutherie.
The "Tree" OM is coming along nicely, and here are a few pics leading up to about 15 minutes ago. While I no longer use molds in construction, I still have them. They turn out to be useful when cleaning up the inside of the extremely fragile "Tree" sides. |

Done for the day, time to walk the dog, eat dinner, catch a flik, and rest up for another big day tomorrow. Tomorrow will be about cleaning guitars a changing string so that I can ship to B.I.G on Thursday, or Friday at latest.

Looking good. I know it is not quarter sawn this time, but that pattern in the "tree" sure is mighty pretty.
B.I.G. awaits your shipment. I am carrying my Sexauer on the plane with me so that will arrive early next week.
