All of my YouTube videos are that way. The only exception being the song I wrote about Hurricane Katrina where I used photographs I found online to create a montage ...and I only did that because I wanted to play around with some free video software to see how complicated it would be to put something together.

Jim-

What software did you use, and how was the learning curve?

That recording was done a long time ago, but daw would have been Pro Tools since that's all I've ever used. I think the mic was an AKG Solidtube and I'm pretty sure the guitar was the 2002 Taylor 814ce Ltd that I recently sold on here. It was a straight take as I only ever intended this to be a file to run by a couple of fellow songwriters.

I think there's a lot of difference in the learning curve on daws. They all do essentially the same thing and the steps involved are similar. I went with Pro Tools 20 years ago because a good friend of mine is a PT guru. He's been able to remedy any problem I've ever run into. Me and that guy became friends because he was the person who recorded and mixed my cd. He let me get a lot of hands-on experience while we were working on that and by the time we were done, I was fairly proficient at all the basic functions. Things past that, I learned as I needed to learn them.

If I were starting today without a friend to rely on, I'd probably try to determine what daw has the most online help available (YouTube, here, any other forum you might be part of, etc.) and if any provide telephone support.

I've been curious about who here is using what, so I'll start a thread that may be helpful to you.

Depending on what computer you have, it probably came with a simple 'movie maker' - insert one picture, insert the audio you recorded in other software, export it as an MP4 video to upload to youtube.

Drifting a bit, but...

iMovie is available on all Macs and iPads free since 2017, if not installed by default.

Movie Maker is a program that came with Windows up to at least Windows 7. I can't recall if it was still there in Windows 8, or if I had to find & install it. There now appears to be a free, new version of Movie Maker, MM10. I installed it from the Microsoft Store and gave it a try on my Windows 10 PC. It's pretty simple but lets you add, trim, split and move clips, add titles, and add audio. Should do the job for someone wanting something free and easy.

If you're uploading to YouTube, WeAreTheHits.com can license covers at no direct cost to you.

Ok, this is an old thread, but I wanted to update some information about mechanical licenses I just was made aware of.

The Music Modernization Act (2020) has (loosely paraphrased here), as of Jan 1, 2021, effectively eliminated the need for a compulsory/mechanical license when a cover song is *only* being distributed for digital download or streaming. [Here I stray into what I was told, not what I found at copyright.gov.] The new rules will require places like SoundCloud to actually pay the copyright owners for all of the music that is streamed/downloaded. There is some lower limit on how big/small a site that does this needs to be before they are exempt, but, a "for instance" I was given is that if you have your own site it probably will not be doing this, so you'd have to manage your own licenses. Note that the old licensing rates for streaming are *gone* so you'd have to negotiate yourself to obtain those. This clearly will push folks that are concerned about this to a place like SoundCloud, which will take care of it for you.

However, you can assume that SoundCloud, now that it's like YouTube, in a sense, will be driven to more revenue producing ads, or fees, to pay for all of this. And, it (my supposition) may mean that covers that were blocked on YouTube but were slipping by on SoundCloud may also get noticed now and removed or whatever action they deem in their best, financial interest.

My thought is this is probably good since it should result in some more revenue flowing into the music publishing business and a trickle of that will go to writers. And, it means your days of worrying about copyright violations (jk) are over, if you are using any of the big streaming sites.

I'm sure there are lots of winners and losers in this, but I don't follow this stuff to know who the sides are. Just know if you were buying mechanical licenses for SoundCloud, you probably don't have to do that now.

IANAL, ipso facto, lorem ipsum....

If you are looking to spread your music out publicly, just make a video and post it on youtube.
Humm not sure I understand your point here ? First let me say while I understand that Sound Cloud is primarily populated with songwriters publishing their originals. There are in fact lot's of covers posted to Sound Cloud. And given Sound Cloud uses automatic content ID software and will take down any covers (where the copyright holders have pre requested a block or if the register a block request after finding a cover of their song they want taken down) .
So in a practical sense licensing a cover my not be "necessary" because many copyrights owners may not consider Sound Cloud distribution significant enough or may not feel the cover is an infringement as much as it being free promotion,

And objectively and historically almost all songwriters also do covers of song they like . So maybe the more appropriate question is why wouldn't one post a cover to Sound Cloud ?

The point is to simply say that if you were doing what was legal and ethical, i.e., paying for mechanical rights to put a cover on SoundCloud, that is no longer necessary.

The "onus" is now on SoundCloud to sift through the postings, identify the covers and owners, and insure that appropriate payment is made. It's unlikely, but entirely possible that they or some hosting sites with less resources may simply decide that letting members post covers cannot be supported. Some sites probably saw this coming and have adjusted business models to try and insure they have revenue to pay rights, but there may be other fall-outs or unintended consequences of this.

As the OP of this thread, I've actually been somewhat glad that I got pushed to put together some originals and arrange trad material.

There are some covers I'd like to post. However, I don't think I'll tempt the fates with a Dylan cover, now that he's got even MORE dough to pay his lawyers.

BTW, you can license covers on YouTube through WeAreTheHits.com. There is even the remote possibility (VERY remote in my case), that both you and the song writer can receive some income.

Thats a good point,,, not sure it was the one MB was making back in August that I was replying to,,, But certainly now simplifies posting a cover on Sound Cloud.
I had heard about the Music Modernization Act, but did not realize it is now in effect as Of Jan 1.
Actually it appears after briefly reading some of the provisions of the act that the providers like Sound Cloud do have to reasonably facilitate the identifying of cover songs which they already have according to Sound Clouds copyright policy page where they state (i.e they have been using automated search software , since 2010 to identify copyrighted covers) Now the have to also report such covers but,,,, it looks like the new 3 rd party entity established in the Act, will be one collecting the fees from the providers like Sound Cloud and distributing the money to the copyright holders .

No, my point (back in August) was that casual music listeners do not use SC - only other musicians. Yes, you can link your songs on SC to friends/family, if you want. But why PAY to do it, when you can create a simple youtube video - and EVERYONE uses YT - and post it for free? I've noticed in the recent past that Eagles song covers no longer get taken down, just monetized. I suspect the same would hold true for other artists' songs that people do covers on and post to YT too that in the past would be taken down (usually Warner Brothers owned song).

Well, now you don't have to pay to do it on SC. (In practice, very, very few probably paid to do it before.) But, no direct or licensing payments, or not yet... For folks that are just recording audio (like the majority of S&T posters here), SC seems to be the preferred method. I hope this change doesn't end up eliminating outlets like that, though I expect some fallout.

But, maybe YouTube, in addition to the option to have their backing track/music added to your video, may branch out and let you have their video added to your music upload. (Actually surprised they haven't gone there yet.)

I don't know about other platforms but so far SC seems to have taken the change in stride. Maybe the subscription option generates enough revenue to cover the blanket license fee ?

That's actually not a bad idea for those only really interested publishing their audio recordings and not into getting video. Maybe having some kind of genre theme based catalog of video's and slide shows
