I remember watching baseball games on TV when I was a kid. Even then I noticed these long gaps of silence and nothing happening on the field. Now the announcers spew all manner of facts, statistics and opinions but there still seem to be the long gaps of inactivity on the field....

I agree. It’s like shootout in hockey: a skills competition on top of a tie. It will also bring about the creation of the designated runner who can’t throw or hit.
