Default Portable Recording Devices

Looking for opinions regarding portable recorders. Just want something to record my own practice and writing sessions.

Zoom H1 and H2 are nice, inexpensive recorders.

I use a zoom H4 and it is great. Fanyastic sound quality and great mics. Could not be happier. I bought mine off the forum used for $145. It is worth a great deal more to me.

I love my Zoom H1. Simple, small, and good quality.

Just bought a Tascam DR-05 and I love it. Recorded one of my bands the other night and it sounds great for a $100 portable recorder.

I have a Zoom H2. Got it used from the Forum Classifieds for $90. It does a great job.

I have been considering the Zoom H4N for it's ability to plug guitar and bass into it and record tracks separately or all together, has lots of effects, good onboard 4 mic's that are adjustable from 90 to 120 degrees or just use it as a simple recorder. Also not counting the Tascam 5 and 7 out either as they post good results at a lower price. If you just need a simple press record and play back then zoom H2N or Tascam 5 may be your ticket (though they do get into some deeper functions if needed).

Hi I'm looking for handy recording device.

Looking at Zoom H2n or Tascam DR-40 (same price according to Amazon).

I hope to record with overdubs (vocal harmony over guitar) and best possible mic in this price range.

Which do you have or prefer to have? Thanks!

The H2n lacks the overdub feature as a built-in capability. The H4n offers this feature but costs more.

Default Portable Recorder

The Tascam DR-1 is really useful. It's a great recorder and it also works well as a practice device by letting you mix your guitar with material you are working on. Speed adjustment allows slowing down playback without changing pitch. Great for learning fast riffs or dissecting complex chords. There are some newer versions now too.
