Here are some more width/stereo plugins for comparison. I followed Doug’s original format of leaving the first 11 seconds dry and then letting the plugin kick in. Some of these plugins are pretty awful, imo, but I think a couple do a nice job. In order, here’s what was used.
1. Dry
2. Boz Digital Labs Width Knob
3. Klevgrand Haaze2
4. LeapWing Audio Stage One
5. Nugen Audio NG-EL Stereoizer
6. Plugin Alliance brainworks bx_stereomaker
7. UAD Precision K-Stereo Ambience Recovery

Please excuse the little pops at some of the transition points. I forgot to cross fade them.

Interesting. I'd forgotten about the K-system recovery plugin. I like that one sometimes. I assume the BX is meant for making a mono signal stereo? It Sounds the most dramatic, but kind of fake. Ozone has one of those "stereoize" options as well, which kind of makes things sound chorusy.

If I'm picking a favorite, it's the LeapWing Audio Stage One. Keep in mind I had that thing dialed up to 100 so the effect can be less dramatic than in the example. I thought the Klevgrand Haaze2 wasn't too bad either.

Plugin Boutique has the Weiss MM-1 maximizer plugin on sale today and I grabbed it. The plugin has five modes: transparent, loud, punch, wide, deess. Since we recently explored various width plugins, I did a quick demo using the track by Doug Young that was used on the other demos. The plugin kicks in at about the 11 second mark.

I just gave a listen to the examples on the product page. Again, all full mixes. The Widener seems to do a decent job and I do like that they included a frequency selector to keep lower frequencies down the middle where you'd want them.

The Deepener didn't really impress me. Why would I want to use that on a full mix? If I'm pushing something to the back, it's always going to be a specific instrument or bg vox. I don't want a plugin making that decision which seems to be what that plugin is doing. Hearing used on individual tracks within the mix would have been more helpful.

I agree to get something to sit further back I usually just lower the level and/or add some reverb, with no pre delay

I am guessing the "Deepen" is supposed to be more or less some type of Mid Side Effect like for a Mix Bus maybe ?. But I do that with the Mid/Side option on my Mix Bus compressor.

Here's a free widener plugin. I gave the video a quick listen and it sounds pretty good to me.

Polyverse Infected Mushroom Wider
