If you find yourself having ONLY a 57 or something similar, though, you may want to bring it in quite a bit closer, and pointed more toward the edge of the cone (which is a lot closer to the front to the cabinet than the center of the cone is). That way you can take advantage of the mic's proximity effect, and the 57 will give you more more warmth and size than you'd get if you positioned it as in the photo.
The live room the amp was in is a great sounding room and we wanted some of that so I pulled the mics back. In a dead room or a bad room I'd have them close to the grille. The angle skewed so much: the mics don't look near co-incident and it doesn't look like they are aimed 1/3 of the way in between rim and center, but they are. It was really nice sounding.

By the way, the SM57 gives it the low and high with a notch in the middle and the R-121 rounds out the middle nicely. You can get much the same effect with one mic, the Royer R-10 passive ribbonn that costs about $500. They shaped the response of that mic to give you the combination of the SM57 and the R-121. You may need a Cloud Lifter because it is a passive ribbon.

More HERE.

Thanks everyone! It appears that most are recording bass guitar through DI and software then adding effects later. Guitar appears split.
