These cases come in both blue & black, & seem to be random which one you get.

While there was undoubtedly some overlap during the transition, I've personally never seen a black molded case from before the '80s; by the same token, a former bandbud had a Brazilian 000-28 - which should have come in a traditional HSC - with a factory-original blue-grey case, introduced well after Martin discontinued BRW guitars...

I wonder what years Martin used cases with butterfly latches? I just picked up a ‘93 J-40 that came in a black thermoplastic case with butterfly latches, made by TKL. The one benefit of those cases is that they don’t have the “teeth” on the end of the latches.
