Default hand surgery and .....

Hi, today was the day. I had the rigger finger release procedure done on my right hand this afternoon. By request, the surgeon allowed me to watch her doing it.

So I'm sitting here typing with my left hand with my right bandaged up like a boxing glove ... for 12 days! and my right arm in a sling!

So that's all good news, but while I was there I asked her to glance at the strange bulge in my left hand which gets sore after playing.

"ah yes, that is dupuytens contracture! It will get worse slowly!"

Well, whoopee ! This ol' body sure is letting me know that it's wearing out!

Well Silly, I have it too...and it's in the advanced stage. No longer able to play keyboards with a full octave stretch, but for acoustic it has become a help, not a hindrance! I finger style, and the set of my picking hand sits perfectly on the strings. Strange to have this happen as I age, but it is just another of lifes challenges that need time to figure out. Think hard about the "injection" treatment...I opted out.

Hi, mine in in my fretting hand, and it stings, but you opted out of cortisone shots ?

May I ask why?

Sure you can! my treatment options are down to two...injections or "scraping" surgery. The injections are not cortisone...they are botulism injections that eat away the cord(and everything else) with the added fear of introducing botulism into your system. Even my specialist wasn't promoting the injections!
If cortisone is an option for you, I'd be much more open to investigating that route. All the best, Jd

Ah! I totally understand! Is there not a surgical option?

I wish you a speedy recovery! I was 9 months with a brace that went from my thumb to my forearm on. my dominant hand. I bought my first Martin to use as "therapy" afterward.

Perhaps you should be looking for a new guitar....for therapeutic reasons of course.

All the best!

Hi Andy

I have had DC particularly in my left hand for 12 years now and in my case it is very slow developing. It has affected my stretch such that I can only play short scale guitars with 44mm nut. The only finger that has bent over is my little finger were the top section is almost at right angles but I manage. It does actually seem to have stabilised, with my right hand only showing it in my palm, touch wood!!

I have known two people who had the operation and both say it came back but quicker.

I suppose I'm saying don't worry too much yet because my case proves that if you get it it doesn't necessarily mean that it will happen quickly or go to the extreme position.

I also have two screws in my left wrist that affects rotation but that's another story

The chances of even more damage outweigh the chance of correction and long rehab. Decided to stay where I am.
