Default Build Thread aka Dream Come True: Kinnaird Guitars Student Build

I do not post on here often but want to share with you all an amazing experience I'm lucky to have courtesy of Steve Kinnaird and Ryan Middlebrook.

I am in the process of building a guitar under their watch. This has truly been a bucket list item for me and I'm grateful to do so with their guidance, coming away with what I know will be a fantastic sounding guitar.

I'm building a 12 fret 25.4" scale deep body 00 with lucky strike redwood and tucarensis back/sides. We're planning on having a guitar 'in the white' completed in 6 days at which point it will be sent off to finish and then a 7th day spent on final setup. That sounds like mission impossible but Ryan has a game plan that will make it happen!

I realize this thread is useless without pics and they will be provided tomorrow along with a running recap of days 1 and 2. I wanted to post this now before I pass out from a long (but FUN!) day of building. For those who are like me and are fascinated by this craft, it's a humbling yet incredibly inspiring experience to install your own rosette, trace out a bracing pattern, glue on said bracing, and last but not least bend sides! I swear I shaved a couple of years off my life span doing that but somehow it happened.

More to come tomorrow but again, a huge thank you to Steve and Ryan!!!

Looking forward to seeing your guitar come to life--thanks for sharing it!

Congratulations! And interesting: a deep body 00. I was just thinking about whether such a beast exists in the wild.

Yep. Martin.

6 DAYS!!??!! Stay focused, and count on the "days" being longer than your basic 8 hours

Steve got a kick out of your post Jamie. H165 beat me to it but Martin does offer a deep body 00 as a special order and made the Jeff Tweedy 00-DB which also has a 25.4"

Steve and Ryan keep asking me that and my answer is always the same - loving every minute of it! With that said, here are some observations:

1) Tucarensis smells amazing
2) Chisels are extremely difficult to use
3) Bending wood using a hot pipe is not for the weary and yet somehow I did it
4) I completely understand now why I lost interest in electric guitars and love acoustics. This craft is a true art form and while I always appreciated it, I have a greater respect for luthiers. Walk a mile in their shoes and all...

Ok proverb aside, on to some pictures!

Using a chisel to cut notches in the center strip reinforcement for back braces

Cutting notches into the lining to glue on the back. I swear this router has a mind of its own!

Back is glued on!

On to the top - ready to be carved so that we can close the box tomorrow

Day 2 is in the books and I want to say thanks to Steve, Billie, and Ryan for their hospitality. Steve and Ryan have been extremely patient, explaining each step guiding me along the way and special thanks to Billie for the greatest reuben sandwich I've ever had!

What an awesome project and opportunity. I've never heard of Tucrensis. Can you elaborate on that wood? It certainly looks beautiful!

Looking like a top notch build. Your Senseis must be proud.

Since Steve has special powers, he knew I would make exactly that comment!
