Paul, your camera, as they say, loves Sophie the dog. She takes great photos.

So the deer must not care for the wild iris? I really like irises, but haven't tried planting any because I figured they would be chewed to the nub by the next morning.

Thanks Ken!

Deer don't particularly like Iris and will leave them alone if they have other choices. They don't like scents either so the purple strain that smells strongly of grape would be a good choice. It's the only Iris that has any scent at all.

Just returned from the island of Hawai'i. We have friends who live there so we stay free and get to see things that many tourists don't make it too. Green sand beach (Papakolea) is really beautiful. It's a 5 mile round trip trek from the roadway and locals will 4 wheel you out there for $20.

A little description and 2 pics I took.

The Big Island of Hawaii’s green sand beach is located at the southern tip just west of South Point. The sand is actually a green olive color caused by eruptions from what was once a volcano. In fact, green sand beach itself is within what was once a cinder cone. Three sides of the cone are still present, with the ocean coming in from what would have been the eastern edge. Imagine swimming in an ancient volcano’s cinder cone with green sand? You can and it is a site not to be missed when traveling to the Big Island.

Green Sand Beach is named Papakolea. The green sand gets it’s color from olivine crystals created from eruptions to a dormant volcano years ago. Nestled in Mahana Bay, this is truly a unique place and one of only two green sand beaches in the world. While there are no organized tours, this isolated place is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from most of the resorts up along the Kohola Coast. Keep in mind, driving to the actual beach is out for all but the most experienced off road drivers. Instead, most opt for a 2 1/2 mile hike each way along the wind swept and hot dusty deep rutted jeep roads.

Very nice, David! My wife and I know that beach well and have enjoyed such views there many times, as well as on Sanibel-Captiva. We wintered at FMB for 10 years and just sold our place this past April. Come November, we’ll miss it, but we’ll be finding new destinations.

Thank you! It’s our second time down here, for a family reunion on my wife’s side. I think I’d much prefer Florida just about any time *except* July, but that’s when the event happens.

Here’s another one from last night, after a major storm moved through.
