This is very sad. He was amazingly talented, a great teacher, and a wonderful person. RIP Woody.

I copied the following off of Stefan Grossman’s forum:

His wife Valerie posted this on Facebook:

How do I let you know that we lost our beautiful Woody yesterday after a long medical battle. Woody wished to keep his illness a secret as he never wanted it to define him or be a topic of any conversation. He wished only to dig deep into his music, his many projects, his film production and teaching. My family and I are heartbroken. How do we go on without his gentle loving presence, his inspiring teachings, his brilliant talents and his generous soul. Those in this world who are fortunate to have known Woody, will agree that they have been touched by his special loving heart.
You are forever my greatest love.
Miss you so much my sweet Woody.

I just got word of Woody's passing. Woody was my teacher and mentor and, most of all, a friend. A very sad day for all of us who knew him.

Heaven just itself another great guitarist. I know he wasn't a rock n' roller, but I hope you get the idea...

OMG I just just found out!!!

Respect for keeping his illness out of his public life and to his family all the love for these moments.

Lately I had been watching almost everyday this ragtimefor some reason.

Rest in peace! <3

Although obviously not updated...yet... here's at least some info on who this player was as opposed to a bare statement of someone's passing:

That's a gut punch. I never met Woody, but felt like I knew him from his videos.

I don't know if it is possible for someone of his immense talent to be considered underrated, but I always felt like he deserved a larger audience.... RIP.

I’m really sad reading this….Woody was one of my heroes and one of the nicest guys you would ever meet. Big loss to our community…

What?? No ....

Like some others, I have a few of his videos. I loved his flair with the guitar and his gentle, laid-back way of being and teaching. He seemed such a healthy-looking guy, too.

Bad news, indeed.

The 3 times I Zoomed with him in 2021 there was zero indication anything was wrong.

I took the afternoon to play through some of Woody's arrangements to honor him and remember the times we shared. I would not be the guitarist I am today without him.

Lots of tears today but some great memories too.

I just heard about this on FB via Martin Taylor. Just shocking, it made me feel weepy. The music world has lost so many lately, but this one feels personal to me.

I didn't know him well, I knew his work, was always intrigued by his jazz background (student of Lennie Tristano!) besides his roots music. He collaborated with an old bass player friend of mine. I got to spend some time with him when he came to my town and did an event at my wife's theater a few years ago. He and his wife were such lovely people, a positive joy to be around. What she wrote about him was so true.

I didn’t know him but he seemed like a real genuine, sweet guy and just a giant of a player. He’ll be missed. RIP Woody.
