When eating a meal, some people start with their favourite part while others save it for last. I personally have no opinion on what others do as long as they don't take from my plate.
If I played solo gigs in "safe" contexts (e.g. house concerts), I would absolutely bring my SJ BRW. But since I mostly play in bars and restaurants (and never as a solo act), the only guitar I will gig with is my 2008 Taylor GS. From a practical standpoint, it's all the guitar that I need. It has a comfortable neck and plays/sounds great all over the neck. It also has no sentimental value and would be reasonably cheap to replace. If music were my main source of income, I would ask Jim to build me a base model SJ with a cutaway and a pickup. Until then, I'll enjoy my guitars at home, where I can safely play them for many years to come. |

Like so many others here (to my surprise), I play out with any guitar I own (not all at once, please). They are either in a stand or in my arms. So far, so good.

Why have them? To record with, of course! There's a reason any number of recording artists take a Takamine on the road and leave the better guitars at home. And that's why I'll take the Goodall, but not the McKnights, to coffee shops and pubs. The McKnights are for recording and receive plenty of love and affection at other times, too; they get played, and they don't sit out of sight and out of mind. Call it selfish, perhaps, but a church worship service is a dangerous enough place for the McKnights.

Just to broaden the range of guitars and gigging,
I have a rare custom flamenco, I play a few pieces on it that I could play in a live set but in reality the typical acoustic venues I play neither the guitar nor the music I play on it would be of any interest and since it’s not replaceable I don’t see the point of tempting fate.

I used to gig with my McIlroy A25c custom and Lowden Baritone. Sometimes a Lowden O35cx.
I'm very fortunate to now own a Kostal OM and MDC, which are now my gigging instruments (along with the Lowden Baritone). There might be certain situations when I wouldn't be comfortable gigging with them (e.g. if I'm playing at and staying at a festival and I don't have somewhere safe - both in terms of security and heat protection - to keep them). But they sound awesome and make me want to be a better player, so hopefully that translates into a better experience for the audience! It's also nice to be able to show off Jason's work - though whether I'm doing it justice is another question entirely!

I gig the best ones I own
I played 270 gigs last year! Not as brutal as it sounds, as most are one hour and completely acoustic in Senior and healthcare facilities. So I can usually stack up two and even three in a day.
These folks grew up with real acoustic music and they LISTEN! No TVs or phones going (except the younger caregivers) most of the rooms are fairly quiet until someone tries to escape the wheelchair tether! Beep beep beep… I take my best instruments and revel in the tone! I am completely over the moon with my custom John Kinnaird "Round Peak Experience"!!! I get compliments on the sound and looks all the time. For room to room for shut-ins I usually take my custom R. Taylor 12 fret Style two. It has a super warm lush tone... If I was plugging in in a noisy bar like I used to, I would still take my RTs. But I would not hand them off at an open mic! Haha Play what ever makes your hair stand up on the back of your neck!

I like to use my best guitars on 'gigs'. It does have risks though. Recently did a three day church worship event in an open sided tent and it rained heavily during the second day and the tent started to drip all over the place. Everyone on stage started to dance around to avoid their instruments being dripped on! My Olson and Charis were both on stage! Good news is that they both survived the ordeal in great shape.
The one thing that does worry me is trusting my nice guitars to airlines. When traveling, I take my very nice but much more affordable Ayers.

"Gigs" for me are churches, open-mics, and a couple nursing homes where 2 very special people now live. So I'm lucky in that I don't have to ask myself if I'm going to bring a custom guitar into a risky environment. I mainly play at home, and when I go out I like to the play songs on the same guitar; the guitar that I feel sounds best on that song and the guitar that I've been 'connecting' with. The only exception to this is my yearly fishing trip where I bring the Martin kit guitar I made about 20 years ago.
