Buying generator
I want a very small and quiet probably Honda generator. I will use this to power my amplifier at street gigs. Can anyone tell me how to figure out what generator i need--the minimum size?

In most cases a small PA or combo amp setup just doesn't require much wattage. If you need lighting that's a whole other matter. If you're just busking then I'd just run a battery powered rig. If you're busking at low volume then you'll be disappointed in even the low volume drone of a small generator, and your audience will be, too. Most places where you can busk will object if you need anything beyond a small battery powered rig, and that's too much sometimes. I had a small Street Cube (dual 6" drivers) that I used for backyard weddings and that was plenty loud. I now have a Cube EX (dual 8" drivers and 2" tweeters) that can easily reach obnoxious volume and will run for several hours on a fresh set of AA batteries in its pack. There are demos of these on Youtube, but many small battery powered rigs would be a better choice than a generator. |

..yeah...icksnay on the generator...I have a small Yamaha generator that’s known to be pretty quiet but no way it works for a situation where you can’t place it at least seventy five or eighty feet away....preferably a hundred....

I race go karts...we use gennies at the track of all shapes and sizes for everything from running compressors to powering kettles for a cup of tea. I’ve yet to come across a generator, even the modern “silent” suitcase units, that I’d want to play a gig anywhere near!
I absolutely second the idea that battery is the way to go. Bose S1 Pro seems the perfect solution for mains-free performance.

The small EU2000 to EU3000 watt super quiet Hondas are 50-60 db. I've seen them at events powering circulation fans that were louder than the generator. Worth a listen to decide for yourself plus the added flexibility.

I have a Cummins Onan generator that is pretty quiet. I'd use it at a farmer's market where I could run a 50' extension cord. On a street gig, you're likely to have someone steal your $2000 investment.
Go for the battery deal. Amazon has stuff out there for cheap. A DJ buddy of mine goes that route for events that don't supply AC power. https://www.amazon.com/Jackery-Porta...7818214&sr=8-3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713XJBG2...R0251GJ37D2J7Y

A second or third for the Bose S1. Weighs about 15 pounds and will easily do a 4 hour gig, with no loss of volume compared to plugging in, like some of the other battery powered amps/PAs. I have the backpack for mine - makes it easy to cart around (room in it for cables, and a mic). Guitar in one hand, mic stand in the other, the S1 and stuff on your back - easy.
We have had two of the Honda 2000i generators, usually considered the quietest of their size; still wouldn't want that rumbling in the background, even if you could put it far enough away. Fine to power the fridge or a small a/c on our boat or at the house when the power is out - way overkill to run a small amp.

Tesla and an inverter.
that being said ive used my eu2000 honda and powered our whole band. The cotton candy lady next to us asked to share it and it wouldnt handle the power. its quiet but not enough to use at a street busking event. we run 100 ft cord and stick it behind my truck and you cant hear it. |
