Question Martin D-X1E

Hi,

I watched several demo videos on YouTube on this beautiful guitar and it sounds great.

Also it has a lot of positive reviews despite the HPL materials used.

Any opinion on HPL and the overall quality and sound of this Martin?

Thanks!

I have a Martin DX2MAE that I picked up for $300. I assume it's similar to the D-X1E. The DX2 does have an HPL neck and laminated back and sides. I have half a dozen sub $1000 guitars and the DX2 has become the go to of the bunch. The playability is excellent and it has a nice warm tone. Unplugged it sounds really good but nowhere near as full as my higher end guitars. I use the DX2 with the Fishman Aura Spectrum DI plugged in and it sounds amazing. I do a mixture of styles but prefer fingerstyle the most and it seems to suit this guitar very well. For the money I thing it's a great bang for the buck. YMMV

Default Thanks!

Thank you!

I wish I can find a used one for $300, I'll grab it in a heart beat.

I think the DX2MAE is a little higher end than the D-X1E.

Best,

Hey pablitus, the D-X1E is a nice guitar but I've always preferred the Seagulls, Simon & Patricks, and Yamahas that I've played, which are all in the same price range and even lower.

As far as quality goes, I think they all have similar build quality and should last a lifetime.

I had one. Amazing tone! Played great. Dreads kill my tennis shoulder, sold it, miss it.

Best,
It also has an HPL top. I really recommend you find a guitar with a solid top at least. My Martin X1-DE that I bought new for $360 earlier this year has a solid spruce top and the HPL back and sides.

You can't go by what you hear on Youtube. I've heard great-sounding videos and terrible-sounding videos all from the same piece of gear. It depends upon how the video is made. (I always find it funny, for example, when somebody tests a cheap electric guitar but plays it through a $2,000 guitar amp and with expensive microphones and other recording gear.)
