How do you pronounce “medullary”

I’m sitting here with a couple of friends, one of whom is Anchorage guitar builder Bob Clark, passing three of his guitars back and forth between the three of us. Bob commented that he really liked the medullary rays on one of the guitar’s tops, but he pronounced it differently than I’m used to - he said “MED-you-lary,” instead of “med-DOOL-ary,” which is what I’ve always used.

Most of us, of course, just call it “silk,” but I’m wondering what you builders call it when the occasion arises.

+1 for “MED-you-lary” or for the sake of conversation you could just say "Silking"

It's more widely used as a medical (anatomical) term, and is pronounced:

“med-DULL-ary”

I think I'd go with Dates and Carlton, which is to say, Medjool-Larry.

Purf ... lings as the spelling dictates unless you are from the south then purf-lins may be permissible in some circles.

Another improper name that drives me nuts is when people say “kerfing” instead of the proper “Kerfed linings”. A saw kerf is the void in the material after material has been removed by a saw blade. A solid lining is the interior structure that is glued to the sides to provide additional gluing surface width to bond the top and back to. When someone cuts saw kerfs into the lining to make the lining more pliable then the name changes to kerfed linings as opposed to solid linings.

Haha yeah, if pudding can become “puddin” then i guess the same can happen with purfling. I swear I’ve seen it written as purflin on more than one occasion, I’ll try to find it somewhere. I also had no idea that to “purfle” is the verb for installing purfling, and that’s in the dictionary. What a great word.

I may be guilty of using “kerfing” on occasion, I’m sorry! I’ll try to watch my mouth.

Does anyone else think of sea creatures when they hear medullary rays?
