Default Does anyone know why the G string on elixir strings is always the one to wear out

The other strings are fine but the g always starts show threads or whatever you want to call them. Is it just me and something about my playing?

Thinnest windings.

IN GENERAL, that's where the most force is applied when playing the guitar. That's the string that is played OPEN and fretted more often as well.

That's probably where you're coming down on your downstroke. You must use a pick. I've been using Elixers for 15 plus years now, & never had that problem. And the string is not worn out, the coating is just frayed.

The G string is the most stressed string on the guitar in terms of tension versus core size. Everything happens first to it. I get shredded coating where a flat pick hits when strumming Polyweb Elixir's, but rarely see any when using Nanowebs. They use two different processes, IIRC. Polyweb uses a wrap or sleeve of Teflon around the entire wound string, and Nanoweb uses a coating in the grooves between windings. I think that is right.... I don't get any fraying when finger picking with bare nails, even when there is considerable surface corrosion from finger contact.

There can be the coating flaking and can be the windings breaking.

I have known a handful of guitarist that have broken numerous G strings from Elixirs, and it has never happened from any other brand. That's why almost all of us went to EXP or just none coated in general. The plus to me is that EXP sound and feel better imho.

It is just the coating, but always that string, never the others. I play with a pick and they are the nanoweb

pretty sure it's because the G is the thinnest of the wound strings....

Same thing happens with me. I LOVE Elixer strings......have used them exclusively for 16 years.

I never have this happen on electric version. I know the G is unwound..... but not on the D, A, or E.

A few weeks ago, I decided to try Martin Lifespan for the acoustics. Playing pick and fingerstyle every day on 4 guitars. So far, the G is not flaking like the Elixers.

They sound great too.

Long time elixir user, since almost day 1.. The G strings is always the first one to "go" wrt shredding.

Recently I've moved over to Cleartones, and IME overall they are just "better".. A better feel, they have more volume, clearer projection, and the coatings, or what ever they call it on their strings doesn't shred.

almost at 4 months on 2 guitars that I last strung with these, they look and sound like the day I put them on.

One guitar with Elixir's, since end of july, already showing wear spots on the neck, and the G string is shredding over the sound hole.

I always like Elixirs and just put up with it because I did like them, but at this point I am seriously done buying them.

I play finger style and the Elixir G strings always start fraying within a couple weeks. The strings sound fine though and last a long time. I don’t have that problem with coated strings manufactured by Curt Mangan.

I don't know but when I used to play in a rock n' roll band and I played acoustic, I always broke the G string on my Elixir sets. Admittedly, I had pretty bad technique back then but it was always the G, and I never had that problem on any other strings or different brands.

I recently tried my first set of Cleartones on my HD28. The strings sounded great, except for the low E. It was muted and dead sounding. I made sure the string was secured against the plate and there were no other issues. The next day I replaced the Low E with an uncoated Daddario and it sounded great. I still have that mixed set on and they still sound great.
