You can get the Kenny Hill New World Player with a cutaway and no electronics. New price is above your range, but I've seen them used for under $1K. There is one up on ebay right now, seller is lidarnell. Larry works with Kenny to sell these on ebay and I've bought from him before. It's listed at $1395, but as the listing says, "make an offer, you could be surprised."

So far no one has mentioned Yamaha. Th always get a lot of Bang for the buck, make excellent acoustics and classicals. I believe that you always get a lot of Bang for your $$$ and the quality is very consistent. And there are many choices in that price range. My $0.02

Francisco Navarro and Hill New World offer some well respected options in that range...Yamaha as well, I think.

+1 for Yamaha, I've always been super happy with their instruments. I did a sound test of one vs a Cordoba here:

The other luthier I highly recommend is Juan Montes Rodriguez. Very reasonably priced instruments with incredible playability and sound:

If it were me, for that price range, I would go with what others have suggested and get a Navarro

Scored a pretty much mint Alhambra 9P for substantially less than it's worth. I've been looking at the new 7P and got the 9P for less. I'm a happy camper. NGD photos when I get it.

Congratulations! As a very happy 7p owner, I'm sure the 9p will be a spectacular guitar. I only ever played one (in 2008) and at the time I was so poor and the guitar so expensive that I didn't even really play it. They had a 10, too, but I decided not to risk touching that one...

Ended up selling this immediately - super large neck - very uncomfortable to play but build quality was excellent.

Did you replace it with something that fit your criteria?

Not yet but may be closing in on a very nice Pavan TP-20 cutaway (cedar/EI). will probably know tomorrow. I'm waiting for the OK on a guitar that I shipped out - I don't like to spend the $$$ until I know the customer is happy.
