Default Zimnicki Piccolo Guitar (check this thing out!)

Last fall at the Milwaukee Uke Fest, my friend Gary Zimnicki of Allen Park, MI, brought his usual range of fine instruments. Here is his website:

http://www.zimnicki.com/

He also brought an unusually small guitar he had just built for the amazing Rob Bourassa, who was performing at the fest. All of us first laid eyes and hands on it at the Performer's Dinner at my house the night before. Folks just kept passing this guitar around astounded that a little six string was spitting out such a big and beautiful and complex tone. Built to a 17" scale, this prototype Zimnicki piccolo guitar sounded for all the world like a combination of a full sized 12 string acoustic and a lute or harpsichord. Needless to say, I immediately ordered one.

The other day, piccolo #2 arrived and it is so sweet. Walnut sides and back with a cedar top and koa tone ring/binding. Here are some pics (click on image to enlarge and sorry in advance about the quality of the images):

I'll record something in the weeks to come but in the meantime check out Rob doing his thing:

For In Him Dwelleth All the Fulness (Bourassa)

One of the nice things that Gary and Rob did was to document the build on video. Here are a whole bunch with more to come:

For anyone who might be interested, contact Gary. He is a wonderful person and a talented builder. The price is right and the quality is outstanding. I'm honored to own one of his instruments.

Appreciate the nice comments. Added another tune above, a classical Fugue that Rob wrote for the piccolo guitar.

So, it's tuned BEADF#B? And it uses steel strings?

Gary is an extremely nice guy, as well as a very experienced builder that has built all sorts of unique instruments in his career. Gary built me an all Koa hollowbody archtop with an IRW neck a few years ago, and the guitar's tone, playability, and attention to detail are top notch. You'd be hard pressed to find a more experienced builder at any price point, and again one of the nicest people you'll ever meet! He lives in Michigan, and he and his wife decided to take a road trip to visit St Louis and personally deliver my guitar! BTW, the pickup rings, knobs, switch tip, bridge, and tailpiece are all solid Ebony. The binding on the body, F holes, neck, and headstock is a single layer of curly Maple that creates a simple yet beautiful contrast with the Koa

WOW! Ok, I admit, I was highly sceptical of the above quoted statement. But, WOW! I am very impressed.
