As an aside, I played one of your guitars at Schoenberg Guitar about ten or twelve years ago. Couldn't tell you the model or body style, but it was pretty freakin' stunning...

A few years ago someone offered to sell me a set of Snakewood, and I couldn't resist. Perhaps it was you, I don't recall. The back was already templated and it won't work for anything standard in my repertoire, and if that's not bad enough, the sides are too narrow for a typical steel string guitar at 3/12" maximum.
So I am stepping further than normal outside my Known Zone, and making something I think of as a "Couch Noodler". Philosophically related to my "Companion", but entirely "Other". The shape is more L00 inspired than 00 inspired, but it is closer to the Martin designation size-wise. I have never seen or heard of a Snakewood guitar, which id probably related to the fact that I have also never seen a raw trunk or limb more than 6" in diameter. Have you? Since I think the template relates visually to the L00, I used a L00 inspired rosette as well. It is made up of a lot little strips, and was much harder to wrestle into place than I would have liked. But I got it there. |

This back went down to .058" before it seemed right to me. I am relieved to have the braces on as it is less likely to be broken by my embarrassingly disrespectful handing. Even at .058, this is an unusually heavy back.

Those photos of your making of the rosette are great! I wouldn’t be able to keep my cool throughout that. Looks wonderful.

Super interesting. Will be very curious to know how it turns out. Perhaps it will not yet be sold when it is safe to move about again, and I could come try it?

I think you live within 15 miles of my shop, and yet I believe we have not met. Perhaps we have and I do not know it? I would be delighted to have your visit whenever you feel comfortable with it.

The snake wood looks classy Bruce. Should be a fun project. Now I am wondering what projects you considered for the wood before settling on the “couch.” Spruce top super uke? West coast Quattro? Thin body electric-acoustic hybridy thingy?
I like that Quattro idea, base it on your steel string uke , add some courses. Get this man more snake wood!

Sounds like a fun project and I know Bruce can build an amazing small guitar (yes, from experience). That snakewood is going to look stellar with some finish on it.

Bruce, we have not yet met in person. You have been very kind to invite me repeatedly. This may sound ridiculous, but I have stayed away thus far not wanting to waste your time if I cannot buy a guitar...and I know I am going to want to buy one...and I ought to first dig myself out of a hole I created for myself to do that. I would very much like to play a few of your guitars, however!
