COVID-19: Scenarios to Reopen Italian Economy
From an article in today's Il Sole 24 Ore, the national business daily.
https://www.ilsole24ore.com/art/chiu...italia-ADXoI4G Duration current lockdown (no modifications): mid-April is certain. A scientific committee advising the government is studying options for how to re-open the economy if the numbers continue to fall until then (a big if right now). "Gradually" is the operational term, i.e., we won't go back to life as before overnight. The hypothesis under study is an initial re-start of manufacturing and service businesses where social distancing can be assured. Key vectors for the spread of the virus - schools and universities - would likely remain closed until a later date to be defined. The same for cafés, restaurants, entertainment/concerts, and places of social gathering. When schools and these other businesses eventually do re-open, it would likely be conditioned on their ability to guarantee adequate social distancing. Age-based criteria option: the article states that the committee is also looking at an "Israel model" of permitting those who are less at risk of the virus, possibly those below 50 years old and without at risk health issues, to return to work sooner. Those in "older or more vulnerable" categories would remain for a longer period under home quarantine. I just need to keep harping on this: if there is a significant proportion of the population that has unknowingly had the disease (asymptomatic and minimally symptomatic), they and those known to have recovered will be able to return to work because of their presumed immunity. The way to find them is through serologic testing, which needs to be pushed. Italy would be a good place to do this - do you know of any plans along these lines?

In this evening's press conference (Civil Protection) they would not say what steps would be taking for re-opening the economy other than "we're working on it." (Non answer.) |
