Default Are Dulcimer strings loose

My friend was playing Dulcimer. Noticied the strings kind of buzzed. The two tunings are DAA and DAD. The standard length is about the same as a dreadnought guitar. So the tuning is an octave lower than guitar.

If the strings are loose, you're probably an octave too low.

So standard tuning has the bass string tuned to same note as the D string on guitar. The others are at A below middle C. The other tuning has the bass D and the paired strings tuned to D above middle C and full step below Hi E. I think my friend tunes lower than standard. That could explain why they are looss.
