Congrats! It took me darn near 55 years to find the three Gibson flattops which have chosen to live with me. But Gibson hear my plea. A J45 without a burst is a J50. Been like that since 1942. I know because I own one of those first ones to roll out of Kalamazoo. But it is your company so you can call the guitars whatever you want.

Yes of course you're right - and that variation is part of the thrill of the hunt. But in my personal hunting experiences, where Taylors (for example) have proved remarkably consistent with quite small individual variations within a particular model, I find I never know what to expect when I pick up a Gibson. I spent a while trying to find a good SJ200 (having once played a superb example at a time when I couldn't afford to buy it), but the story of that hunt has been just one (different kind of) mild disappointment after another, and it fizzled out.

But I won't wander off into the maze of this side issue. Here we have a man who has bought himself a dazzlingly fine instrument, and so who cares what OTHER examples are like? Hoorah!

Update:

I've managed to gig with it a few times now. The first guitar im absolutely happy with plugged in through the PA. I've had SO many compliments on it. It is an absolute joy to play and can do strumming, fingerpicking, and everything in between. It's responsive, bright, yet growls and has a bottom end that isnt overpowering but is definitely present. the flatter radius makes playing a breeze. I could and plan on gigging with this for hours on end with no problem.

the perfect "in between" if you like 000 and sloped shouldered dreads. the projection of the SS, and the nuanced and responsiveness of a triple 0.

A+

..although the pickup controls seem to be backwards... LOL counter clockwise for more volume, and counter clockwise for brightness on the tone. oh well!!

Not only does it have a beautiful back but a beautiful top as well. I really like the grain pattern on that one. Congratulations. I'm not loyal to any particular brand but I do like Gibsons as well as any other, I have a Gibson Songwriter and it's an awesome guitar. Gibson seems to get more "hate" than the other popular brands

I honestly think it looks better from the back. Could lead to a whole different type of performance.

Congratulations on the new guitar, and for getting over the Non-Gibson fandom thing.

Hey, that’s one of the straighter grain Gibson walnut backs I’ve seen. Love the sapwood down the middle. Congrats!

Aaron, congratulations on your cool new guitar. I have several walnut instruments, and think it's a terrific tonewood.

The guitar looks pretty nice and all , but the wife ("it was actually my wife that told me I needed to have it.") sounds like a real keeper

Tis a beauty, Aaron. Gibson slopes have a place in my heart.

I’m with Zombie on this nomenclature. It’s a J 50 studio. Really. The folks at Gibson ought to take a history lesson.

Congrats! I picked one of these up a month or so ago. They are amazing guitars!

Here's mine.
