I built a wall unit in the music room back in the 70s. I have a long cabinet that holds 3, 2 on top of the bass guitar, which I haven't played in I don't know how long.
The billion pound TV was originally on the floor in the middle of the unit. As the TVs got larger and lighter I kept re-configuring that space and now the TV is above the original space and that spot holds three guitars - although I'm currently down to two in that spot.

Oh man I forgot about that !!! my wife and I had one of those - I think they lined the huge CRT tube with lead. I could barely lift it off the ground - I think it weighed over 200 pounds (literally, not exaggerating). I was terrified when we had little kids that it would crush the TV stand so we got rid of it.

That's your explanation for the important weight. These were made of glass and enclose a near-vacuum so their walls had to be thick enough to avoid implosion. Esp. the front was extra armoured so that *if* the thing blew that part would remain intact and deflect the shards towards the rear to avoid spamming the spectators in the original sense of the term. (I think the rest of the cabinet was also designed to be able to hold in most of the shards in case of a problem.)
According to an uncle who used to work at Philips's TV division in Krefeld, you could drop a CRT onto its face from several meters high and it'd bounce back up.

Homemade rack similar to String Swing with abit more padding on contact points. It lives in a tree shaded attic but I take it out when temps reach 100 in Texas. I keep a humiditrak there to monitor them.
