Juan Serrano

Don't mean to be morbid, but is Juan Serrano still alive? I took an "Intro to Classical Guitar" class from him at Fresno State a long time ago, and just rediscovered his music on youtube.

Funny story, the first day of class he announced how you could learn to play something very simple and very beautiful from his class. He then broke into something (Flamenco if I recall) with both hands moving about 1000 mph. Anyone who already played a little and thought "I ain't learning anything from this dude" had their attitude suitably adjusted.

What can you tell us about that class?

What year were you at Fresno State University? I was there from 2003 to 2007. This was during the time we had an interim guitar instructor named Corey Whitehead. Juan came back for a year only to retire in that same year. The King of Flamenco, Juan Serrano, will always be my favorite guitarist.

I was just wondering this same thing. The man is a legend. I have a few of his books and always loved his style. His sound was very similar to that of Nino Ricardo my fav. I mean guys like Juan and Ricardo played like men. I found the latest youtube video of him was 12 years ago in a park. he must of been 76 yrs old then. Still playing louder on a smaller nylon string guitar someone handed him then I can play on my martin dread hahah. His strumming technique was always amazing. I mean I learned how to do a tremolo when playing flamenco. But playing that fast and loud strumming with the fingers I could never do, at all lol.

I love his published compositions of Flamenco concert selections! (I’ve only dabbled with a handful of them)
