The photo isn't showing up for me. Is it Bob Weir or Ani DiFranco?

From what I understand it's marketing that's makes a difference. For the longest time nobody knew who or what a Yairi was. Not many guitar retailers carry them in stock so not too many people can check them out.
Just over the past 7-8 years Yairi's started to become a bit more well known, but still they're not as well known as Martin, Gibson or Taylor is in this country. Many pro players have used Yairi's over the years. I bought my DY62C because of Monty Montgomery and personally it's a great guitar regardless of what name is on the headstock. These are well made, high quality guitars. Yes, other than the Masterworks series they're laminate backs and side. But it's how they make the laminates is what makes the difference. If you do a blind sound test with a Yairi laminate guitar and a similar all solid wood guitar, you might be very surprised. They have one of the best collections of tones woods in the world and don't season them in a kiln, all naturally air dried. Everyone has their personal tone preference in a guitar and there's nothing wrong with that. Yes, a Yairi doesn't sound like a Martin or a Taylor or a Gibson. And neither do they sound like a Yairi. I personally really like the Yairi sound. And that doesn't mean I don't like the Big Three, it's just my tonal preference.

This thread is back from the dead.
I don't mind if Yairis don't have good resale. I never plan on selling mine. I've already promised it to my buddy if I go first. It just means that there are good bargains to be had on the used market. I like that they are not so well known. Makes it kind of an exclusive club.

I've seen them go for some stupid / crazy high prices but it's worth roughly around $400 to $500.

Yes Kazuo Yairi instruments rock. One of the major reasons they will not hold monetary value in the USA is because they are saddled with the name "Alvarez". Kinda like if the guitars made by Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman were sold under the name Ibanez because of some legality. "Aww, it's just a Alvarez - I'll give you a couple of dollars for it."

My personal experience is that I bought a used Yairi a few years ago for $650. It was about 15 years old and I seriously doubt it cost that much brand new.
No new, mass-produced guitar is going to "hold it's value". That's a fairytale spread by fans of certain brands. At current retail prices, it's simply not true of any major brand.

If I had a Yairi for sale I wouldn't have as my target buyer someone who didn't know the brand. Enough people are aware of them that they can be sold quite easily for more than fair prices.
