The most I ever spent was $1000, it's probably the best guitar I own, all of the others are $500 or less, and the $1000 is a lifetime keeper. So that's the most I would spend (I voted $3000 or less.)

In 50 years I have owned a total of 17 guitars, inclusive of electric, acoustic, nylon and bass. I have yet to break the $1K barrier and find no desire to do so.

I just spent $3k last week on a brand new Martin OM-28. It's a lifetime purchase, and i truly love the sound of this quality Martin, handcrafted in PA, USA. Hopefully my grandkids will play it someday, and become a family heirloom.

But for the record, i would never spend a penny more than that.

I want that guitar with nearly every fiber of my being - I love Rickenbackers and it is absolutely gorgeous - and I could probably find a way to scrape together enough $$$$ to buy it, but practical considerations just won't allow it.

What am I going to do with a $4300 vintage guitar? I certainly won't feel comfortable bringing it out to the typical gigs I play. Would having a valuable collector's instrument make me a better player? (Answer: NO.) And how would I feel if I accidentally caused a nick or ding?

So, I will stick with the roadworn-but-otherwise-superb Rick 330 that I bought brand new in 1984.

To answer the question, I would have a seriously hard time paying more than about $2500 for a guitar, which is the approx. current value of my most valuable instrument (a 1962 Gretsch Tennesesean, which I bought for $1400 in 2001).

I go to Music Emporium often. Great little high end shop. Good people, nice inventory. I'm in the Sturbridge area.

I paid $3,200 for the most expensive guitar I own at the moment. I would pay up to $5,000 for my dream guitar if I ever were to find it. It would have to check off all my boxes for me to dish out this amount, though. I would also consider selling most of my instruments if I ever were to find "the one".

Now that I think about it, the money I've saved since quitting the 2 pack a day thing in 2002 could have me picking off high end agf classified listings in rapid fire. Time to get busy.

Where do you folks get your money?
Seriously, somehow $2500 would be about it for me. That seems to be just about the limit in my mind for a sensibly-priced guitar that really sounds good.
BTW, I did vote accordingly.
It is easy to assume because someone would choose to spend several thousand dollars on an instrument that they must have lots of money, but it isn't always true. I do not have really any other main hobby than guitars. It is a passion of mine so I budget, save and designate a certain amount of money each year that goes to support that habit. I also choose to support certain charitable activities that are in alignment with my values and beliefs about serving humanity. All these things are very personal choices. Passion isn't logical, so often these kinds of choices do not make sense in an intellectual way.

I am the kind of person who will drive a 20 year old Honda Civic in the ground so I can spend a bit more on a guitar. Practical? Not really. But once I got that dream guitar, then I started saving for a new ride.

On another note, I know of folks who have less than I do and can play the heck out of a cheap guitar. So I do not equate the ability to own a fine instrument with the ability to play one well.

Best,
Jayne

I marked $3000-$6000 because I paid $4100 for my SC 1929 00. I don't regret that at all, but I rationalized the purchase by vowing to never be that extravagant again. It's possible there will eventually be expiration date for "never".

I also quit 2-2-1/2 packs a day in October of 2001! Save me tons of cash! Not to mention I feel better. So guitars are my vice now!

You are assuming that the question is how much someone HAS spent on a guitar, while the actual question is how much WOULD they spend. Very different. It is a hypothetical question.

As it stands, I'll probably never spend more than around what I already have. But if money were no object...

I'd probably be rocking a $350,000 '59 Les Paul. Or two.

OMMV

For one that I actually played? $3k - $6k if I was making some decent money playing it.

For one that was owned by a hero of mine and I few limited resources? Who knows, but probably a lot.

10-12 grand is probably my limit but that's just for something exotic. For about 3K you can get a really awesome guitar.
