Default Can you date this vintage guitar?

Hi folks!

I just acquired this very old acoustic guitar and was wondering if any of you could help me date it or come up with any other info.

It belonged to an 85 years old Canadian man who said it was the guitar of his youth, but would like to know more about it. I promised him I would do my best to gather info.

It is written « Apache » and « Piper » on top of it. Anyone has ever heard of those brands? Will be putting some new strings on tomorrow (10s or 11s). I think it was originally made for steel strings even though it seemed to have been stringed with nylon before.

Here are some pictures,

Thanks for helping!

Well, "Piper" is the brand name for a company that makes small airplanes, and "Apache" is the name of one of their models, so I don't think that's going to help identify the guitar. Can you see any markings inside the guitar? Is there a label inside or any letters or numbers inside the guitar where the neck joins the body? Also, can you take a higher-quality closeup photo of the design on the headstock, between the tuning pegs?

Looks like a Harmony of some kind, better pictures of the headstock would help.

This guitar is described as a 1950's KAY Silvertone.
Very similar headstock shape, fret markers and plain rosette and trim - however, the shape of the tail piece is slightly different.... and it has a pick guard of course.

Default Thank you guys!

Thank you for your help,

I just update the photo link (https://www.flickr.com/photos/147609936@N02/) with the views you requested.

The headstock logo was removed, but I managed to date these kluson tuning pegs from mid 56 to late 58 with this page : http://www.guitarhq.com/kluson.html

There is also a picture of the serial number inside the sound hole.

Any more info is appreciated.

Restringed it and sanded the bridge a little bit : it sounds amazing and plays ok. I plan on sanding the back of the neck eventually, it is a little sticky.

Thanks again

Good one. Sorry about that...

Update : 2 little holes just under the sound hole indicate that there was originally a pick guard on the guitar!

Made by Kay, I'd say late '50s- mid '60s.

The tailpiece looks like the type used on Lyon & Healy guitars for many years.
