Well, you can't say that the guy has been lazing around there so it makes sense that he would be part of the payoff as the company continues to grow and be successful. He has made some key contributions, that is for sure.
I think that the article mentioning his "steady stream of musically-inspiring innovations" and including in that list the body shape for the Grand Pacific might be a bit of an overreach - maybe he tweaked a curve here and there but the slope shoulder dread shape has been around for a while. Albeit, new to Taylor.

Best,
Jayne

I can't imagine that this would come as a big surprise to anyone, whether you build guitars or just play 'em...

He probably got an offer from a competitor that was hard to counter with less than a piece of the action. It is a privately held company and stock options were...not an option.

He’s giving us the middle finger - but it’s good to have some attitude in this new, not brave [Huxley] world of online discussion where it’s too easy to tear something down, but the guy *builds*, and that’s constructive, and that makes for the winner.

Congratulations

I'm glad for Andy Powers and Taylor Guitars. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned....

I've never been a huge fan of Taylor's GA models tonally. I think they're fine instruments but not my first choice tonally. I have listened to all the online demos of the Grand Pacific models and I think they sound amazing, totally different sound for Taylor. As much as I find Taylor's marketing annoying, I think having someone with Andy's skillset is a good business decision for their future. He's passionate about his job and is always experimenting with non traditional methods which I have no issues with. Smart move for Taylor making him a partner IMO.

While I don't care who owns how much of any guitar company, it seemed the writing has been on the wall for some time. Mr. Taylor will be retiring at some time in the future. He hired Andy to be Taylor's Ren Furguson (or pick your chief designer) when he had no need to. It appeared that Andy has had much more control than a simple "hired gun" for some time.

Good for him. Honestly, I don't see why anyone wouldn't see it as a positive thing. Personally, I love my 814C, V-bracing and all, and I'm glad to see someone really trying to build a better guitar as opposed to just cheaper guitars.

If the alternative was seeing the company get sold off to a private equity group or a larger music company, this will be FAR better for musicians as a whole, IMO.

And a congratulations to Andy Powers from me....

I hope the other 2 don’t leave the counting of beans to him and he continues to come up with great guitar design/implementation ideas. My (Taylor) 717e is a great guitar to play but the design is a look to the future with a tip of the hat to the sounds and designs of the past. Genius!

Code:

Ownership percentages:

Bob 49.75%
Kurt 49.75%
Andy 00.50 %
Yep, looks like 100% ownership in total to me
You can say in this scenario Andy is a co-owner.

If someone had the market value capitalization of the company and did the "new partner" admission accounting to make Andy an equal owner as Bob and Kurt, I'm sure the amount of money Andy would need is a considerable sum of moola.

Being a co-owner and being an equal partner are two different things.

Congrats to Andy. I'm not in the Taylor club yet but can certainly see it happening in the future. His contributions have definitely increased the likelihood of that.

I wouldn't have thought Bob and Kurt would make him an equal partner, but I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a way to earn up his % in the future. Clearly they see him as the one to take the helm in the future (at this point at least).
