If you return a guitar do they refund your initial shipping costs? I would think not, but I don't know.

I have no experience with this - I've kept each of my Emeralds; never bought a guitar with the thought that I'd be returning it. I am pretty sure that any of the guitar entities that allow you a "risk free" trial do not refund the shipping.

I see that Emerald is offering free shipping on their St Patrick's Day Sale, with 50% off Celtic inlays on their 3D Builder.

I suspect your experience is typical, hard to imagine very many getting returned once the buyer sees what's in that case ! The workmanship on the ones I've owned was perfect.

Emerald increased their tryout period to match RainSong. It’s a good thing. Mail order arrivals especially international shipping might not coincide with a convenient tryout slot. Also allows time for back and forth needed to resolve issues.

Our local music chain stores have a long standing policy of 30 days tryout. It lets me try using my strings in my environment. I’m usual clear after two weeks about keeping or returning.

Amen to that, I got mine in 2017 after playing a few at the factory, and I can't imagine not having in the stable. It is a fantastic guitar like very few I've ever owned in my just shy of 50 years of playing.

Also makes me wonder where the returns go. Is there an outlet somewhere that sells them at a discount, or do they polish them up and resell them as new?

I purchased an X10 from stock in November, received it and returned in December. They were great about the return. It cost me about $130 USD to return it. I returned it because I didn't like the neck profile (dang near rectangular and very thin front-to-back, plus the fingerboard widened drastically from the nut to the body). I loved everything else about the guitar. With only a 10 day return window, there was insufficient time for me to try to adjust to it. Perhaps the story would have had a different ending with the new 30 day policy.

Emerald is covering the costs of return shipping for the 30-day trial. The FAQs and terms and conditions on their website state that they will arrange a shipping label for the return!

That’s a welcome update - it was not the case a week or so ago.

This truly is a risk-free trial - a great way to overcome what many perceive as the primary obstacle to owning an Emerald.

This new 30 day return policy is giving me GAS for a X20. I’ve never played one or heard one live, but I’ve got GAS. I may not be able to hold out until I come back to the reality of I have enough guitars.

Got this from their chat this morning.
