Default Caldwell Guitars 2019

I've started a new build for a previous customer and thought since it's been quite awhile since I did a build thread, I'd post some pics. It's an 0-28 with a few twists that I'll reveal as we progress.

Thanks for following along. (Looks like I've posted both the photos and links. I can't quite figure out how to get rid of the links...………??)

Guitars come and go and, as much as hate to admit it, I rarely miss them. One exception - my Caldwell 00. Looking forward to watching this one come together.

Best,
Robert

Oooh! Yes, please post lots of photos. I've always admired your work. That 00-42 at Schoenberg is quite nice!

Same thing with me: my Caldwell 00 was the best one that got away. I got to play it a couple of weeks ago for the first time in years, and now I miss it more! It found a better home though, and it's being played in public daily as the best guitars should be.

I've made a little progress over the holidays. Here's what we have so far.

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...1&d=1545838420

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...1&d=1545838554

https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...1&d=1545838637

Binding and purfling is up next. We're deviating a little from the traditional 28 style and these will become apparent in the coming round of posts.

Thanks for looking.

Here's our progress so far. I've completed the binding and purfling and cleaned everything up. A couple of the deviations I talked about earlier - rope purfling in place of herringbone and did I mention this is a 13 fretter?

BTW - I can't figure out the image protocol, so please bear with me.

Thanks for looking. I'll also say that I hope to meet a lot of you at Tom's Big Show in a couple of months. Less than an hour and a half from my house...….pretty sweet. I'm sure there will be lots of fun and some great Texas BBQ. See you then.

Jimmy, could you post a photo or two of your personal style 30 with the banjo tuners? I'm sure people here would love to see that combo.

Matthew,

Thanks for asking. This one was a blast to build and even more fun to play. With no one to please but myself and no time constraints, here's what I came up with.

13 fret 00 body Brazilian Rosewood Back & Sides
Torrified Adirondack Spruce Top w/Torrified Sitka Bracing
30 Style Appointments (Ivoroid Trim, 45 Rosette, Rope Purfling)
Boxed End Graft
Unbleached Bone Saddle, Nut, End & Bridge Pins
Ebony Fingerboard & Bridge w/Thru Saddle
Spanish Cedar Neck w/Bird's Beak Joint @ Headstock
Bar Frets
Raw Brass Banjo Tuners w/Tortoise Buttons

Awesome looking OO Jimmy. Please share your opinion of the Torrefied Adi top. I just finished one and wondered if your opinion of it is similar to mine?

Tim,

With a sample size of one, I'm hesitant to read too much into the results, but for my tonal target, I'm very happy. I thinned the top about .005 under my norm and thinned the x slightly also. It's super responsive and responds equally well to finger style or pick, though I'm generally playing it with a pick. I am going to put a set of nickel bronze strings on it and see how it sounds. I have a set on my Greven and really like them.

There are a lot of tonal influences on this guitar ... Bar frets, Ebony neck reinforcement, Spanish Cedar neck to name a few, but as we all know the majic is in the top and I'm very encouraged by what I hear with this material. Hopefully others will agree.

I very interested to hear your comments.
