Default "Second Chances" - an original song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGCe3oaUy2c

“Second Chances”
(David Pennybaker)

You hung out with the wrong crowd / From an early age
I never understood / Those dangerous games you played
I tried to warn you / I tried to steer you right
You wouldn’t listen / Your dusk turned into night
In your darkest hour / You thought your life was through
It could’ve been someone else / Why’d it have to be you?

Why’d it have to be you? / It just don’t seem fair
Why’d it have to be you? / Why do I even care?
You ran out of second chances / Doing the best you could do
It could’ve been someone else / Why’d it have to be you?

After some time away / I hoped you might change
Why that was so hard to do / You never could explain
You must have thought / You were a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde
Your friends all turned on you / There was nowhere left to hide
You knew it was over / There was nothing left to do
It could’ve been someone else / Why’d it have to be you?

Why’d it have to be you? / It just don’t seem fair
Why’d it have to be you? / Why do I even care?
You ran out of second chances / Doing the best you could do
It could’ve been someone else / Why’d it have to be you?

You’ve been running all your life / Your demons finally caught up with you
Without you here / What am I supposed to do?

Why’d it have to be you? / It just don’t seem fair
Why’d it have to be you? / Why do I even care?
You ran out of second chances / Doing the best you could do
It could’ve been someone else / Why’d it have to be you?

Oh, it could’ve been someone else / So why’d it have to be you?

Thanks for sharing. Hope that's not about a personal relation of yours.

Thanks. No, not really. Though I can't deny that the chorus was influenced to some degree by the loss of my friend, Kylie Rae Harris, about 20 months ago. I wrote *this* song to her after her tragic death:

The hook for "Second Chances" ("Why'd it have to be you?") literally just popped into my head two weeks ago while I was having my hair cut. And the line "You ran out of second chances, your demons finally caught up with you" came to me as I woke up the next morning. Though that line eventually got broken into parts of two separate lines (one in the chorus, one in the bridge).

I tried very hard NOT to make this song about Kylie. I originally wrote the verses to describe something (completely made up) somewhat specific . . about somebody who was in trouble with the law, just so it wouldn't be about her. But then I went back and tried to strip anything specific out of the lyrics so that the listener could fill in his own story.
